About the role

This temporary position (up to 11 months per calendar year) serves as a Fixed Route Bus Operator within ECU Transit, reporting to the Operations Planning and Compliance Manager. The role involves safely operating 40-foot or smaller transit-style buses on fixed routes, transporting the ECU community around campus and the surrounding Greenville area in compliance with Federal Motor Carrier Safety Regulations and state/local traffic laws. Work hours vary between 6:30 AM and 1:00 AM, including weekends and nights during fall and spring semesters.

Responsibilities

  • Safe Operation:
    • Comply with Federal Motor Carrier Safety Regulations, including hours-of-service, fit-for-duty, medical certification, and vehicle safety inspections.
    • Exercise defensive driving, good judgment, and adjust for weather/traffic conditions.
    • Demonstrate thorough knowledge of Greenville’s geographic area.
    • Use two-way radio to communicate accidents, emergencies, or criminal activities while prioritizing safety.
  • Passenger Management/Customer Service:
    • Provide excellent customer service and sound decision-making under pressure.
    • Greet passengers courteously and assist with boarding/disembarking.
    • Ensure passenger safety and comfort; address concerns or provide assistance as needed.
    • Operate wheelchair lifts, secure mobility devices, and assist passengers with disabilities.
    • Occasionally assist with baggage loading/unloading.
  • Vehicle Maintenance:
    • Perform pre-trip and post-trip vehicle inspections.
    • Report mechanical issues to the maintenance team.
    • Maintain cleanliness of vehicle interior/exterior during shifts.
  • Administrative Duties:
    • Complete reports/forms for accidents, incidents, breakdowns, or mechanical defects.
    • Maintain accurate records of mileage, fuel consumption, and incidents.
  • Other Duties:
    • Perform physical tasks related to vehicle inspections/operation.
    • Complete ongoing training for professional development.
    • Participate in team meetings, monthly safety meetings, and special events (e.g., local charters/shuttles).

Requirements

  • Valid NC Commercial Driver’s License (CDL), Class B or A, with passenger endorsement and no air brake restriction (must qualify for interstate driving, no K-restriction).
  • Valid DOT Commercial Driver Medical Certificate (MEC) Form MCSA-5876.
  • Entry-Level Driver Training Certification (if CDL obtained after February 2022).

Preferred Qualifications

  • Previous experience operating transit-style buses or equivalent commercial passenger vehicles.

Pay

$17.55/hour

Applicants must be authorized to work in the U.S. on a full-time basis. Most positions require residency in North Carolina or a reasonable commuting distance after hire.
