About the Role
A Schuff Steel Production Fitter-Welder applies expertise in steel and bridge fabrication to assemble and fit structural, plate, and mechanical materials for complex, high-profile projects in commercial building, bridge, and industrial sectors. This critical production role requires welding a variety of materials in all positions with a high degree of proficiency, including knowledge of heat reactions of structural metals and blueprint interpretation.
Responsibilities
- Follows applicable welding procedures (AWS, AISC).
- Welds on ground level, above ground, and below ground in any required position.
- Chips, peens, and grinds material to prepare for welding or finish.
- Welds structural materials such as plates, sheets, girders, and tanks, including uncommon structural metals under close tolerances.
- Straightens materials by heat or flame.
- Performs gouging and scarfing as needed.
- Takes and passes welding test in accordance with AWS D1.1.
- Reads and interprets blueprints, plans fitting operations, and directs material handling and assembly.
- Lays out work lines, fits up jigs, checks, squares, and scribes detail connections.
- Ensures work conforms to drawings and notes; cleans material by grinding or chipping.
- Burns, tack welds, copes, bevels, and straightens material for assembly.
- Performs minor layout and spot painting for identification.
- Moves material and welding equipment to and from work areas.
- Positions component parts on tables or fixtures, tacking as required.
- Maintains a clean and organized work area.
- Performs other routine duties as directed by management.
- Adheres to all safety rules and PPE requirements.
Requirements
- High school diploma or GED, and/or 12 months of stable work experience.
- Must pass required weld test and fitter test.
- Certification in AWS D1.1 weld test.
- Ability to read and interpret blueprints, safety rules, operating instructions, and procedure manuals.
- Basic mathematical skills (addition, subtraction, multiplication, division in all units of measure).
- Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions in written, oral, or diagram form.
- Proficiency in using a variety of hand tools and welding equipment.
