Offshore construction role focused on fitting, assembling, modifying, and repairing structural steel, piping supports, equipment supports, handrails, grating, and other components for offshore projects.
Responsibilities
- Read and interpret construction drawings, structural drawings, sketches, blueprints, and specifications.
- Perform accurate measurements, layouts, and material preparation for offshore construction projects.
- Fit structural steel components including beams, channels, angles, plates, braces, supports, and other fabricated assemblies.
- Fit and install handrails, stairs, ladders, grating, equipment supports, pipe supports, and other platform components.
- Measure, mark, cut, bevel, grind, and prepare materials for welding and installation.
- Align and fit components to the proper dimensions, elevations, and tolerances before welding.
- Perform tack welding when qualified and authorized.
- Assist welders with material preparation, positioning, alignment, and fit-up.
- Identify proper materials and verify dimensions before fabrication or installation.
- Perform modifications and repairs to existing offshore structures and equipment supports.
- Assist with demolition, removal, and replacement of structural components when required.
- Work closely with riggers and crane operators during material handling and installation activities.
- Properly use hand tools, power tools, grinders, cutting equipment, come-alongs, chain falls, and other construction equipment.
- Inspect completed fit-up to ensure proper alignment and compliance with drawings and job specifications.
- Maintain tools, equipment, and work areas in a safe and orderly condition.
- Participate in Job Safety Analyses (JSAs/JHAs), toolbox meetings, and pre-job safety meetings.
- Follow all company, customer, and offshore facility safety policies and procedures.
- Properly use required personal protective equipment (PPE) and fall-protection equipment.
- Recognize and report unsafe conditions, equipment deficiencies, or potential hazards.
- Assist other members of the construction crew as necessary to safely complete assigned projects.
- Perform additional offshore construction and maintenance duties as assigned by supervision.
Requirements
- Previous experience as a structural fitter, construction fitter, ship fitter, or offshore fitter preferred.
- Offshore construction or oil and gas platform experience strongly preferred.
- Ability to read and understand structural drawings, fabrication drawings, measurements, and construction specifications.
- Ability to accurately use tape measures, squares, levels, and other layout tools.
- Knowledge of structural steel fitting, cutting, grinding, beveling, and fabrication techniques.
- Working knowledge of offshore construction tools and equipment.
- Ability to identify common structural materials and components.
- Ability to work effectively as part of a construction crew in an offshore environment.
- Must be able to follow verbal and written instructions.
- Must demonstrate a strong commitment to workplace safety.
Certifications / Training
Depending on project and customer requirements, the following may be required:
- TWIC Card
- SafeGulf and/or SafeLand
- Water Survival / HUET
- Offshore Orientation
- Fall Protection
- Basic Rigging
- Confined Space Training
- H2S Training
- First Aid / CPR
- Customer-specific offshore safety training
- Additional certifications as required by the project or facility
Physical Requirements
- Frequently lifting, carrying, pushing, or pulling construction materials, tools, and equipment.
- Standing and walking for extended periods.
- Climbing stairs, ladders, scaffolding, and platform structures.
- Bending, kneeling, crouching, reaching, and working in confined or restricted areas.
- Working at elevated heights while properly utilizing fall-protection equipment.
- Working around moving equipment, cranes, rigging operations, and active construction areas.
- Wearing required PPE for extended periods.
- Working outdoors in varying weather conditions, including heat, humidity, wind, rain, and other offshore environmental conditions.
