Job Summary
Support fitness program members in reaching fitness goals through delivering safe, effective and motivating fitness programs in a variety of fitness settings including group fitness classes (land and/or water depending on certifications and experience), fitness equipment located in the fitness centers, recreational opportunities and/or personal training. Supportive of the Village’s mission, values, and service/hospitality (PRIDE) expectations. Completes training as required by policy.
Essential Job Functions
- Provide initial orientations for new members.
- Collect health history questionnaires, release forms, and physician consent forms (if meets criteria for needing a physician consent form) from members.
- Conduct fitness assessments and create individualized fitness plans based on fitness center member goals.
- Reassess individuals at intervals determined by fitness manager.
- Develop positive rapport with fitness center members to support engagement in fitness programming.
- Lead senior-appropriate fitness classes (floor, chair and/or water), adapting as appropriate for varying abilities and mobility levels, demonstrating proper exercise techniques and monitoring participant safety at all times.
- Provide semi-personal or personal training to members to contribute to their overall well-being.
- Ensure all participants are properly trained in the use of the facility’s exercise equipment.
- Maintain the exercise area and equipment to ensure they are safe and clean.
- Participate in and promote fitness center challenges, fitness education opportunities and other fitness center activities.
- Fully utilize the Fliip app and other fitness apps to support Village fitness programming.
- Adhere to all safety regulations and requirements.
- Handle stress well and get along with others within the workplace and with customers outside the department.
Education
- Bachelor’s degree in Kinesiology, Exercise Science, Sports Science, Health & Wellness, Physical Education, Recreation Management or four (4)+ years of equivalent experience required.
- National fitness certification: ACE, NASM, ACSM, or NSCA required.
- Group fitness certification: ACE Group Fitness, AFAA GFI, or ACSM GEI or equivalent preferred.
- Certified Personal Trainer: ACE CPT, NASM CPT, ACSM CPT, or NSCA Certified Personal Trainer or equivalent required, or ability to obtain within 90 days of hire date and prior to personal training.
- If teaching an aquatic class, Aquatic Fitness Certification (AFAA, ACE, AEA, Arthritis Foundation Aquatic Certification or related and/or Lifeguard Certification required, or ability to obtain within 90 days of hire date and prior to teaching aquatic classes.
- CPR/AED and First Aid certification (current) required.
- Current valid driver’s license is required with proof of insurance required.
- Senior-specific fitness certification (SilverSneakers, Functional Aging Institute) preferred.
Experience
- 1+ years’ experience in Fitness, Therapy or related field required.
- Must have knowledge of a variety of exercise programs and fitness equipment required.
- Experience in directing exercise programs preferred.
- Experience in directing exercise programs for senior adults is preferred.
Special Working Conditions
- The associate is subject to inside environmental conditions which provide protection from weather conditions but not necessarily from temperature changes.
- The associate is exposed to infectious diseases.
- The associate is required to function around individuals with challenged mental capacities.
Physical and Mental Demands
- Medium Work – Exerting up to 50 lbs. of force occasionally, and/or up to 20 lbs. of force frequently, and/or up to 10 lbs. of force constantly to move objects.

- The associate will finger with whole hand or arm such as picking, pinching or typing; grasp by applying pressure to an object with the fingers and palm and feel attributes of objects, such as size, shape, temperature or texture by touching with skin, particularly that of fingertips.
- The associate will talk to expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word accurately, loudly, and/or quickly; and hear sounds at normal speaking levels with or without correction and having the ability to receive detailed information through oral communication.
