Fitness Coach (Part-Time, Urban Squash Cleveland)
About the role
Urban Squash Cleveland (USC), located on the campus of Urban Community School (UCS) in Ohio City, promotes the academic success and the physical and mental health of Cleveland youth through intensive educational and enrichment programming, training and competition in the sport of squash, and meaningful connections between youth and caring adults in a nurturing, supportive community. USC also offers the Cleveland Community Squash program, which provides a variety of activities at affordable rates, including access to leagues, lessons, clinics and tournaments. All Urban Squash Cleveland team members are employed by UCS, a recipient of the 2026 and 2022 Top Workplace Award from The Plain Dealer and recognized as a National Green Ribbon School for Environmental Practices and Learning Model.
Responsibilities
- Plan and lead engaging weekly fitness and conditioning sessions for Urban Squash Cleveland students-athletes in which they set clear fitness goals and track their progress.
- Provide age-appropriate instruction focused on strength, cardiovascular fitness, agility, flexibility, coordination, and overall athletic development.
- Incorporate activities that complement students' squash training and support injury prevention and healthy movement.
- Adapt activities to accommodate varying ages, abilities, fitness levels, and experience.
- Create an environment that is safe, welcoming, inclusive, encouraging, and fun.
- Build positive relationships with students and reinforce expectations related to effort, teamwork, sportsmanship, accountability, and respect.
- Provide clear instruction, demonstrations, encouragement, and constructive feedback.
- Monitor students during activities and ensure equipment and spaces are used safely and appropriately.
- Assist with setup and cleanup of fitness spaces and equipment.
- Communicate regularly with Urban Squash Cleveland staff regarding student participation, progress, needs, or concerns.
- Collaborate with squash coaches and program staff to support consistent programming and student development.
- Follow all Urban Community School and Urban Squash Cleveland policies and procedures, including expectations related to student safety and supervision.
- Perform other program-related responsibilities as assigned.

Education and Experience
- High school diploma or equivalent required.
- Associate's or bachelor's degree, or current enrollment in a degree program, preferred.
- Experience leading fitness, strength and conditioning, athletics, physical education, recreation, or similar programming strongly preferred.
- Experience working with children and/or adolescents strongly preferred.
- Knowledge of safe exercise techniques, appropriate progression, and basic injury-prevention practices.
- CPR/AED and First Aid certification preferred or willingness to obtain.
Physical Requirements and Work Environment
- Ability to actively lead and demonstrate fitness exercises, drills, and activities.
- Ability to stand, walk, bend, squat, kneel, reach, and move throughout the duration of fitness sessions.
- Ability to lift, carry, move, and set up fitness equipment weighing up to 50 pounds.
- Ability to participate in moderate to vigorous physical activity for extended periods of time.
- Ability to safely supervise students in active fitness and athletic environments.
- Ability to work in indoor and outdoor settings, as programming needs require.
- Must be able to walk significant distances and climb stairs throughout the day.
- FBI/BCI background check required.
