About the role
The Fashion Institute of Technology (FIT), an internationally renowned college of art and design, business and technology, of the State University of New York, invites applications for a part-time adjunct faculty position in the Textile/Surface Design Department, School of Art and Design.
Responsibilities
- Deliver relevant course material
- Audit and assess student performance
- Provide guidance and assistance to students both in and out of the classroom
- Submit grades on time
Requirements
- Minimum Qualifications:
- Practical experience in textile/surface design for fashion and/or home markets
- Expertise in both traditional and CAD techniques for original design development
- Strong abilities in layout and repeat creation
- Possess the capacity to research and analyze color and concept trends
- Solid understanding of historical and current design and color trends
- Capacity to articulate industry-standard practices and language
- Preferred Qualifications:
- Course specific skills as outlined in the job description
- Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:
- Knowledge of industry practices and language
- Ability to teach traditional painting, traditional media (painting), CAD, and applied color theory
Additional Information
- This is a part-time position, adjunct teaching position beginning in Spring 2026.
- Courses meet once or twice a week in person at FIT for 15 weeks.
- Courses include TD 115 Introduction to Textile/Surface Design, TD 116 Color Principles and Practices, TD 141 Nature Studies, Td 155 Decorative Fabrics, TD 206 Advanced Home Textiles, TD 251 Techniques for Decorative Fabrics and Surfaces, TD 304 Textile Surface Design for Lifestyle Products, TD 413 CAD for Portfolio Presentation, TD 462 Portfolio Collection.
- Compensation: $89.98 per hour based on minimum qualifications. The final rate, step and appointment rank are determined by a candidate's ability to demonstrate that they meet the respective school's additional criteria for hiring "above the first step," in accordance with the CBA Adjunct Salary Schedules (pp 88-89).

- Physical Requirements and Work Environment: The working conditions for this position will be any combination of the classroom, lab, and/or office space. Certain roles may be required to handle machinery and chemicals. The physical requirement for this position will require frequent sitting, constant standing, occasional bending, occasional walking, and occasionally lifting 10 lbs. or less.
