Fisheries Field Technician

About the role

This position will primarily assist with juvenile salmonid sampling using rotary screw smolt traps and backpack electrofishing in wadable streams.

Responsibilities

• Conducts monitoring of fish populations using rotary screw traps.
• Conducts juvenile salmonid population survey and PIT tagging using backpack electrofishing.
• Performs data entry and data management.
• Maintains field equipment.
• Interacts with the public in a professional manner.
• Takes responsibility for work quality and adheres to safety protocols.
• Communicates effectively in both written and verbal formats; receptive to feedback and new ideas.
• Contributes positively to the team and supports ad hoc technical duties as assigned.
• Completes assignments by deadlines or notifies supervisor of delays.
• Demonstrates a commitment to continuous learning and improvement.

Requirements

• Bachelor’s degree in biology, environmental science, or related field is preferred.
• 0+ years of experience.
• Valid Driver's License.
• Strong computer skills.

Qualifications

• Experience working on rotary screw traps and with backpack electrofishing is preferred.
• Experience working with federally listed fish species such as steelhead, Chinook Salmon, and Bull Trout is preferred.
• Able to follow safety protocols and maintain a safe work environment.

Skills

• Experience with juvenile salmonid sampling, including anesthetizing fish, weighing and measuring fish, identifying and interpreting marks and tags, identifying species of salmonids and other fishes, and PIT tagging fish.
