Fish Culture Specialist I

About the role

This position involves the propagation and care of fish at a fish culture station. Duties include administering feed, cleaning tanks, assisting in sampling and transfers, monitoring water quality, and performing maintenance tasks.

Responsibilities

  • Administering feed to fish using appropriate regimens.
  • Cleans and maintains fish rearing tanks and raceways.
  • Assists in fish sampling and transfer events.
  • Maintains facility water levels and quality.
  • Observes fish for behavioral abnormalities or health issues, reports findings, and assists in investigations.
  • Administers chemical treatments as directed and under supervision.
  • Loads, transports, and stocks fish as assigned.
  • Assists in public outreach efforts.
  • Participates in preventive maintenance and repair of facility equipment.
  • Engages in facility grounds keeping and janitorial duties as required.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in fish culture or a natural resources field.
  • OR One (1) year or more experience in the propagation and culture of food or game fish.

Qualifications

  • Valid Vermont driver's license required.
  • Significant physical labor in varied climatic conditions.
  • May be solely responsible for operational surveillance on evening or night shifts or weekends.
  • Subject to call-in at any time due to emergencies, employee absences, or other reasons.

Skills

  • Strong attention to detail.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Knowledge of fish biology and husbandry practices.
  • Basic computer skills for data entry and record-keeping.

Pay

The pay range for this position is $36,000 - $44,000 per year.

Schedule

The schedule for this position is typically Monday through Friday, with occasional evening or weekend work as needed.
