Fish and Wildlife Technician 1

About the Role

This position primarily supports "Snapshot NY," a statewide project aimed at collecting a species inventory, presence, and distribution data using trail cameras in Region 2 (NYC). The role involves significant fieldwork, coordination with landowners, and data management.

Responsibilities

• Coordinate with landowners to set up, maintain, and retrieve trail cameras.
• Refresh batteries and memory cards, and process/organize photo data.
• Conduct fieldwork, including driving to sites, off-trail navigation, and hiking.
• Work independently and as part of a small team in remote areas.
• Assist with other regional wildlife program tasks, such as wildlife surveys and collecting/preparing carcasses for the Wildlife Health Program.
• Perform additional duties as assigned or as needs emerge.

Requirements

• 30 semester credit hours, including 12 in fisheries, marine resources, wildlife management, mariculture, marine biology, aquaculture, aquatic/marine/terrestrial ecology, zoology, marine technology, botany, limnology, hydrology, or oceanography.
• Valid driver’s license or ability to meet transportation needs.
• Ability to negotiate difficult terrain and work in remote areas or adverse weather conditions.
• Ability to lift and move objects up to 50 pounds.
• Willingness to work evenings, early mornings, weekends, holidays, and overtime as required.

Preferred Qualifications

• Prior experience handling, installing, and maintaining trail cameras.
• College coursework or work experience in urban ecology and mammal species.
• Professional experience communicating and engaging with the public.
• Familiarity with handheld GPS and navigation.

Schedule

This is a seasonal, hourly appointment with a typical work schedule of Monday through Friday. The anticipated end date is 11/30/2026, though the actual termination date depends on program needs and funding. Some evening, early morning, weekend, and holiday work may be required.

Travel and overtime may be required. Actual work schedule, duties, and travel requirements will be discussed during the interview.
