About the role

Assist Fish culturists in the daily operation of the Van Hornesville Fish Hatchery.

Responsibilities

• Cleaning ponds, raceways, and troughs
• Feeding fish
• Conducting fish sampling and inventory
• Operating hatchery equipment and vehicles
• Loading trucks for stocking and transfers
• Lawn care and snow removal
• Performing general hatchery and equipment maintenance
• Assisting with volunteer and public outreach events
• Communicating regularly with the public at the hatchery and on stocking trips

Requirements

• Thirty (30) semester credit hours, including 12 semester credit hours in fisheries, marine resources or wildlife management; mariculture; marine biology; aquaculture; aquatic, marine or terrestrial ecology; zoology; marine technology; botany; limnology; hydrology; or oceanography
• Valid driver’s license or ability to meet the transportation needs of the position
• Ability to negotiate difficult terrain
• Ability to work in remote areas and adverse weather conditions
• Ability to lift and move objects up to 50 pounds

Schedule

• Overtime may be required
• Overnight travel may be required
• Weekends and holidays may be required

Additional Information

This is an hourly appointment currently funded through 11/30/2026, with a likelihood of continuing beyond that date. Program needs and funding will determine the actual termination date.

Transportation needs of this position require use of a state vehicle and adhering to the Department’s Vehicle Policy.

Travel may be required.
