About the role
The Certified Surgical Tech works under the supervision of the Nurse Manager. They follow established procedural guides in the preparation of sterile supplies and equipment used in surgical procedures, perform appropriate room duties involving direct patient care, and function autonomously as part of the operating room team.
Responsibilities
- Follows established procedural guides in the preparation of sterile supplies and equipment used in surgical procedures.
- Performs appropriate room duties involved with direct patient care.
- Functions autonomously as a member of the operating room team.
- Collaborates with the surgical team and under the direction and supervision of a physician, assumes responsibility for the care and safety of patients, instrumentation, supplies, and equipment during the surgical procedure.
- Affirms responsibility for ensuring effective communication with the circulator, charge nurse, the patient, the surgeon, anesthesia in other hospital departments.
- Responsible for integrity, safety, and efficiency of the sterile field.
- Aids in the care of sterile supplies and equipment.
- Provides aid in exposure, hemostasis, closure and other intraoperative technical functions that help the surgeon carry out a safe operation.
- Performs additional duties as directed by the Nurse Manager.
Requirements
- Holds and maintains the Certified Surgical First Assistant Professional Technologist credential administered by the National Board of Surgical Technology and Surgical Assisting.
- A current CPR card is required; either an American Heart Association Basic Life Support (BLS) for Healthcare Providers card or an American Red Cross Professional Rescuer card required.
- Minimum of two years of operating room technician experience required.
Qualifications
- Incumbent must hold and maintain the Certified Surgical First Assistant Professional credential administered by the National Board of Surgical Technology and Surgical Assisting.
- A current CPR card is required; either an American Heart Association Basic Life Support (BLS) for Healthcare Providers card or an American Red Cross Professional Rescuer card required.
- Minimum of a 2-year Associates degree or 4-year Bachelor degree with specialized training in surgical processes, anatomy, instrumentation and/or equipment through an accredited school of Surgical technology or appropriate training program for surgical technology through the United States military or the United States Public Health System.

- Knowledge and skills required to provide care and/or service appropriate to the level of development of patients, with consideration of the needs of patients’ families.
- Collaboration with the surgical team and under the direction and supervision of a physician.
