Job Summary

- Certified First Assistant (CFA)
- Moves and positions patients for surgery.
- Assists the surgeon in draping of the patient.
- Retracts tissue and exposes the operating field area during the operative procedure.
- Clamps and ties vessels to control bleeding during surgical entry.
- Keeps the operative site dry.
- Affords the surgeon the best possible exposure of the anatomy incident to the operation.
- Assists the surgeon in identifying any structure which should not be ligated and keeps these structures from the moves of the surgeon.
- Assists in closure of the incision including tying off bleeders, applying sutures and wound dressing and performs any and all tasks required of him/her by the surgeon incident to the particular procedure.
- P practices correct operating room etiquette.
- Complies with all relevant statutes, regulations and institutional policies pertaining to the role of the first assistant.
- Applies principles of asepsis and infection control knowledgeably and skillfully.
- Recognizes potential emergency situations or surgical hazards and initiate preventative or corrective measures in a timely manner.
- Performs proficiently and calmly in all emergencies.
- Works effectively and in harmony as part of the operative team.
- Thorough understanding of appropriate instruments pertinent to the surgical case.

Basic Cardiac Life Support (CSFA) Certified Surgical First Assistant
