About the Role

Under general supervision, the Firefighter controls and extinguishes fires; rescues persons endangered by aircraft crash, structural fire, or other emergencies; prevents fire by reducing or eliminating potential fire hazards; and responds to medical aid calls, vehicle accidents, and hazardous materials (Hazmat) incidents.

Knowledge and Abilities

• Applicable laws, rules, and regulations related to Aircraft Rescue and Firefighting (ARFF)
• Office procedures, methods, and equipment, including computers and software applications (e.g., word processing, spreadsheets, databases)
• Basic arithmetic (addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, decimals, percentages, ratios, and fractions)
• English usage, spelling, grammar, and punctuation
• Principles of effective customer service
• Principles, practices, and procedures of aircraft firefighting and rescue
• Principles of structural, wildland, and aircraft firefighting
• Operation and maintenance of firefighting equipment and apparatus
• Fire and life safety codes
• Basic life support principles and techniques
• Advanced Life Support (ALS) techniques (when assigned to a paramedic position), including IV therapy, cardiac monitoring, advanced airway control, and medication therapies
• Standing orders provided by off-line medical director (paramedic positions)
• Medical terminology (paramedic positions)

Responsibilities

• Perform firefighting, rescue, emergency, and medical aid response duties
• Drive and operate aircraft rescue firefighting and structural apparatus equipment
• Learn and apply the Incident Command System
• Administer basic and advanced life support (as applicable)
• Operate and maintain firefighting rescue equipment and apparatus
• Respond to hazardous materials incidents
• Analyze situations quickly and adopt effective courses of action
• Work safely under hazardous conditions
• Provide assistance for medical aid, vehicle accidents, Hazmat, and other emergencies
• Review and interpret maps, diagrams, and mechanical drawings
• Establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with customers, co-workers, agencies, and the public
• Communicate clearly and concisely, both verbally and in writing
• Organize and prioritize work assignments
• Keep accurate and orderly records
• Make arithmetical computations accurately and rapidly
• Maintain confidential information
• Interpret and apply federal, state, and local laws, codes, and regulations
• Operate standard office equipment (e.g., computers, radios, testing equipment)
• Perform ALS procedures and maintain accurate medical treatment records (paramedic positions)

Requirements

• Possession of a current and valid Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) or Paramedic certificate/license issued by the National Registry of Emergency Medical Technicians or the California State Emergency Medical Services Authority (EMSA)
• Completion of a Fire Academy conducted by an Accredited Local Academy (ALA) or an Accredited Regional Training Program (ARTP). A valid California Firefighter I Certificate of Completion may substitute for this requirement.
• Applicants must submit proof of requirements (e.g., unofficial transcripts) with their application.

Qualifications

• A valid California Driver License, Class C or higher, is required at the time of appointment. Incumbents must obtain and maintain a Firefighter Endorsement from the California DMV within six months of appointment.
• Incumbents must acquire and maintain an Air Operations Area driver permit issued by the Department of Airports within two weeks of appointment.
• Incumbents must acquire and maintain a valid EMT certificate issued by the California State EMSA within one year of appointment and obtain County accreditation within 90 days of state licensure.
• Some positions require a valid EMT-Paramedic license issued by the California State EMSA, with County accreditation within 90 days of appointment.
• Incumbents without a California State Fire Marshal Firefighter I Academy completion must complete it within twelve months of appointment.
• Incumbents must complete an initial 40-hour Aircraft Rescue and Firefighting training program and annual recurrent training per FAR Part 139.
• Incumbents must wear a designated uniform and personal protective equipment.
• Incumbents must acquire and maintain an airport security badge for access to secure locations.

Physical Requirements

• Physically perform duties while wearing personal protective equipment
• Demonstrate physical endurance, agility, strength, and stamina under emergency conditions

Working Conditions

• Work various shifts, overtime, weekends, holidays, and be subject to 24-hour “on-call” status
• Work outside in all climatic conditions, including inclement and very hot weather
• Work at various locations within Sacramento County

Schedule

The probationary period for this classification is twelve (12) months.
