Firefighter (Multiple Openings)
About the role
The Firefighter performs firefighting and fire-prevention activities to protect life and property. Assists other personnel in controlling fire scenes or performing other specialized activities as assigned. Ensures the station, apparatus, and equipment are always ready. Trains daily while on duty to ensure skills are superior to the expectations of our citizens. Assists other Florence County Fire Rescue bureaus as needed to enhance collaboration and improve overall emergency response effectiveness. Promotes a professional and honorable appearance in our community.
Responsibilities
- Responds to fire alarms, emergency medical calls, accidents, and hazardous situations.
- Suppresses and extinguishes fires using appropriate techniques and equipment.
- Performs search-and-rescue operations in dangerous, time-sensitive environments.
- Provides emergency medical care, including CPR, first aid, and basic life support.
- Operates around fire apparatus, including engines, ladder trucks, and other support vehicles.
- Inspects buildings and enforces fire safety codes and regulations.
- Cleans and maintains firefighting equipment and ensures operational readiness.
- Completes thorough and accurate incident reports.
- Participates in ongoing training, drills, and community outreach programs.
- Maintains physical fitness that ensures success with job demands, annual stress test, and annual agility test.
Qualifications
- High School Diploma or GED.
- At least 18 years of age.
- A valid SC Driver’s License with a good driving record.
- Preferred NFPA Firefighter 2 certification (must achieve to maintain employment).
- Medical First Responder certification.
Non-Essential Functions
- Performs all other related duties as required by the Fire Chief.
- Manual labor activities, such as hydrant maintenance, hose testing, yard maintenance, sweeping, and mopping, will be required.

Must be able to exert up to fifty pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to twenty-five pounds of force frequently, and/or up to ten pounds of force constantly to lift, carry, push, pull, or otherwise move objects. Must be able to lift and/or carry weights of ten to fifty pounds. Must be able to wear a self-contained breathing apparatus. Must be able to climb a ladder at heights up to 100’.
