About the role
The typical starting pay for this position is posted. This role performs firefighting, fire prevention, and rescue work, maintains and cleans Fire Department buildings, grounds, and equipment, and works under the direct supervision of the Fire Chief, Deputy Chief, Fire Captain, Fire Lieutenant, Fire Engineer, or an Incident Commander at emergency scenes.
Responsibilities
- Responds to alarms for fires, hazardous chemical, and emergency medical incidents.
- Lays and connects hose to hydrants and fire apparatus, attaches, and changes nozzles, aims, and directs water streams.
- Uses various hand and power tools to fight fires, gain entry, extricate victims, and ventilate buildings.
- Utilizes various portable extinguishers, wet and dry chemicals, solvents, and absorbents to fight fires and contain spills.
- Performs salvage and overhaul activities including protecting building contents, cleaning, securing, and preserving fire scenes.
- Moves firefighting equipment from trucks, lifts and carries items, sets up and uses ladders, tools, and equipment as necessary.
- Climbs ground and aerial ladders, scales walls and rappels using rope and harness.
- Maneuvers under, over, or around obstacles.
- Searches smoke filled buildings utilizing self-contained breathing apparatus looking for the location of fire, occupants, or victims.
- Conducts prolonged running, walking, or standing while conducting inspections, pre-fire tours, and emergency scene operations.
- Cares for the injured and administers basic emergency medical aid.
- Performs routine and preventive maintenance on equipment and assists in periodic inspections or certification tests.
- Reads, studies, and interprets department procedures, technical manuals, and building plans.
- Participates in drills and training sessions to maintain required level of knowledge and skills proficiency.
- Maintains and cleans Fire Department buildings and grounds.
- Operates vehicles and fire apparatus as required.
- Prepares and delivers various public education programs regarding fire prevention and safety.
- Affords fire safety inspections of public and private buildings or property.
- Identifies and reports maintenance needs of assigned equipment.
- Deals effectively and courteously with fellow employees and the public.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
Requirements
- Must be a High School graduate or equivalent.
- Must have current certification issued by the Missouri Division of Fire Safety in Firefighter I and II.
- Must be knowledgeable in the principles, methods, and equipment associated with firefighting and rescue work.
- Must be able to read and understand manuals and technical information.
- Must be able to follow oral and written instructions.
- Must be able to effectively communicate through written and verbal skills.
- Must have good cognitive and analytical skills, be able to handle stressful situations, and can quickly assess situations.
- Must be able to make decisions under pressure.
- Must be able to perform effectively as a member of a team in carrying out the City’s Mission, Vision and Values as well as the Trust Edge Experience©.
- Must display overall professionalism displaying the utmost integrity, discretion, courtesy, cooperation, discipline, and behavior.
- Must possess a valid Missouri State Driver’s License.
- Must have first responder certification upon hire.
- Must currently possess Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) license or be able to obtain within one (1) year probationary period.
- Applicants for a full-time Firefighter position are required to complete testing through the Tri-State Fire Recruitment Alliance and must be on the Alliance’s current applicant listing to be considered for hire.
- Must obtain NIMS 100 and 700 upon completion of probation period.
- Must be at least 18 years of age.
- May be required to work a variety of shifts including nights, weekends, or holidays.
- Subject to emergency call-in.
- Must be a dependable person due to the small size of the work force.
- Must meet the annual physical requirements as established by the department.
- Will be subject to random substance abuse testing.
Qualifications
- Education & Experience:
