Firefighter/EMT

Summary or Purpose

Responds to emergencies and performs duties related to fire suppression, rescue, emergency care during ground and air ambulance transport; other tasks as appropriate and in accordance with level of training. Assist with departmental training; travel to North Slope villages as needed to provide support and training.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

• Respond to emergencies and perform fire fighting, rescue, emergency medical and medevac duties as assigned.
• Aid the Battalion Chief and Village Fire Chief with support as needed.
• Travel to and work in outlying villages to provide support and training.
• Assist the Battalion Chief/Training Officer and/or Emergency Services Instructor to ensure training courses are taught according to lesson plans and schedules.
• Assist with coordinating special projects as needed and assist as assigned.
• Assist with the NSB Fire Department Explorer Program as needed.
• Maintain training skills and certification through participation in applicable education opportunities and training as required.
• Maintain inventory, readiness of equipment and supplies.
• Operate, clean and inspect emergency, fire, rescue, medical and life saving tools, equipment and facilities.
• Maintain certifications and personal records of certification.
• Perform other duties as assigned.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

• Knowledge of NSB Fire Department policies and procedures, firefighting and emergency services techniques and procedures, and related safety and legal issues.
• Knowledge of fire ground operations safety.
• Knowledge of pre-hospital practices.
• Knowledge of methods and techniques to present training programs.
• Knowledge and ability to use emergency response vehicles, specialized fire department and personal protective equipment and gear, rescue equipment and emergency medical equipment and tools.
• Skill in planning, organizing and scheduling technical training classes.
• Skill in establishing rapport with small and large groups to facilitate effective training opportunities.
• Skill in effectively presenting information in a classroom environment.

Education, Experience, Certifications and Licenses Required

• High school graduate or G.E.D./A combination of 12 years of education and related work experience.
• Ability to obtain Firefighter/EMT Trainee required certifications within six months of hire.
• Valid Alaska Driver’s License that meets North Slope Borough insurance criteria.
• Career Ladder position.

Non-Rotational Position

• This position is NON-Rotational. Housing is NOT provided. Therefore, due to extreme weather conditions in the arctic and for your safety, housing accommodations must be located and pre-arranged by the applicant prior to the start of employment. The applicant must pay for housing; it is not provided by the NSB.

Work Schedule

• To comply with the Borough's non-rotational policy and non-traditional work schedule requirements, the incumbent will be on-duty at the Fire Station for 2 days, followed by 4 days off. While on-duty, the incumbent will be required to stay at the Fire Station.
