About the role

The Brookhaven National Laboratory Fire Rescue Group is part of the Laboratory Protection Division within the Facilities & Operations Directorate. Formed in 1947, this full-time, career department provides fire suppression, emergency medical services, hazardous materials response, confined space rescue, technical rescue, salvage, and damage control for Brookhaven National Laboratory. The Firefighter/EMT will ensure the safety and protection of people, equipment, and property through firematic procedures, emergency equipment use, and emergency medical assistance.

The initial training shift is Monday through Friday, 8:00 AM to 4:30 PM. After a 12- to 15-week probationary period, the candidate will transition to a 24-hours-on / 48-hours-off rotating shift schedule.

Responsibilities

  • Fire Suppression
    • Respond to fires in buildings, vehicles, and wildlands.
    • Operate hoses, pumps, ladders, and fire apparatus.
    • Conduct search and rescue operations in burning or smoke-filled buildings.
  • Rescue Operations
    • Rescue trapped victims from vehicles, buildings, or other hazardous situations.
    • Serve as part of a Rapid Intervention Team (RIT) to rescue trapped, injured, or lost firefighters.
    • Provide confined space rescue support for on-site entries.
  • Fire Prevention and Inspection
    • Inspect buildings for fire hazards and code compliance.
    • Inspect and test fire protection systems, standpipes, fixed protection systems, fire doors, fire extinguishers, and fire hydrants.
    • Educate the public on fire safety and prevention.
  • Maintenance and Training
    • Maintain fire equipment, vehicles, and the firehouse.
    • Conduct fire extinguisher training for Laboratory employees and guests.
    • Participate in drills, physical fitness training, and continuing education.
    • Conduct maintenance and hydrostatic testing of fire extinguishers.
  • EMT Duties
    • Emergency Medical Response
      • Respond to medical emergencies such as heart attacks and trauma.
      • Provide basic life support (BLS), including CPR, bleeding control, oxygen administration, 12-lead EKG, and BLS drugs.
    • Patient Assessment and Care
      • Assess patient conditions and gather vital signs.
      • Stabilize patients and prepare them for transport.
    • Transport
      • Safely transport patients in ambulances to hospitals.
      • Communicate with hospital staff during patient transfer.
    • Medical Documentation
      • Accurately document patient care, vitals, and treatment provided.
  • Additional Duties
    • Respond to hazardous material incidents, natural disasters, and other emergencies.
    • Serve as a member of the Rescue Task Force Team.
    • Collaborate with law enforcement and other emergency services.
    • Support community outreach programs and public events.
    • Monitor the site Fire Alarm system.
    • Track fire protection daily impairments.

Requirements

  • A minimum of five years progressive experience in a volunteer or career fire department.
  • Current New York State EMT-B certification with at least three years continuous certification.
  • Certification as a motor pump operator on a Class A pumper through New York State, Suffolk, or Nassau Counties.
  • Firefighter I Certification.
  • New York State Certified Hazardous Materials Technician or equivalent based on curriculum.
  • New York State Certified in Confined Space Rescue or equivalent based on curriculum.
  • Able to work 24-hour shifts and holidays after completing the 15-week training period.
  • Possess a valid NYS Driver’s License.
  • Must meet medical requirements of BNL’s Job Medical Assessment Form, including passing an extensive medical physical, stress, and functional capacity tests.
  • Must join IBEW Local 2230 and maintain membership within 30 days of start date.
  • Must obtain and maintain a DOE Uncleared Personal Identity Verification (UPIV) credential.
  • Must produce a REAL-ID or REAL-ID compliant documentation for site access.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Firefighter 2 Certification.
  • Fire Inspector 1 certification.
  • Trench Rescue Technician certification.
  • High Angle Rescue certification.
  • Rapid Intervention Team Training.
  • Aerial or Ladder Operations certification.
  • NIMS ICS 100, 200, 700, and 800 certifications.
  • Experience serving as a line officer in a volunteer or career fire department.
  • Associate degree or higher in fire protection technology or related field.
  • NYS Paramedic Certification.

Pay

The starting rate for this position is $48.19 per hour during the probationary period.
