Firefighter (Basic Life Support).

Responsibilities

• Employ a variety of established emergency medical techniques, methods, and equipment to stabilize a patient for transport to the receiving facility.
• Respond to emergencies involving traumatic injury or medical illness which may be life-threatening.
• Respond on-site to accidents and other emergencies involving injuries and illnesses requiring basic life support.
• Operate a hazardous material vehicle.
• Operate a variety of major motorized firefighting equipment, including structural and brush firefighting vehicles, using knowledge of equipment capabilities to respond to various types of fire alarms and aid requests.

Requirements

• Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
• Completion of pre-employment and periodic subsequent medical examinations in accordance with DoDM 6055.06 to ensure physical health and ability to perform duties.
• Requirement to lift up to 50 lbs. in the regular performance of duties.
• Compliance with Federal and Department of the Army Drug Free Workplace Programs; detection of drugs is warranted.
• Designated as Mission Essential; required to report to work or remain at work during severe weather or emergencies.
• Use of personal protective equipment provided by the employer.
• Wear the prescribed uniform and/or personal protective equipment while on duty.
• Work both planned and unscheduled overtime, including mutual aid support to local fire departments.
• Possess or obtain and maintain a valid state Driver’s License to operate vehicles.
• Successful completion of an annual Job Performance Test.
• Participation in a cardiovascular physical fitness program.
• Periodic (e.g., annual) medical examinations to determine fitness for continued performance of duties.
• Wear a uniform and appropriate safety apparel in accordance with established policies and procedures.
• Possess an appropriate, valid state and government driver’s license and Emergency Vehicle Operator’s certification.
• Successfully complete an annual emergency vehicle operator’s course.
• Subject to a one-year probationary period unless previously met as described in 5 CFR Part 315.
• Maintain a functioning telephone at residence to aid in contact during recall/emergency situations.
• Required to report for duty during natural disasters and other emergency situations; may require mandatory overtime and subject to recall.

Schedule

This position requires you to work 72 hours per week (144 hours per pay period), including at least one 24-hour shift, nights, weekends, and holidays.

Qualifications

This position is open to US Citizens and is included under the provisions of Special Retirement Coverage (SRC), which may have both a maximum entry age and a mandatory retirement date.

Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student; social). GS-04 Level

• Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience including classroom training or courses in Fire Science, basic firefighter training, or on-the-job training associated with the use of fire equipment, fire safety, or firefighting. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-03).
• Education: Two years of education above the high school level in an accredited college or university in Fire Training, Fire Science, or other related fields of study.
• Combination of Education and Experience: A combination of education and experience may be used to qualify for this position as long as the computed percentage of the requirements is at least 100%.

GS-05 Level

• Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience including controlling or extinguishing fires as a member of an organized military, industrial, volunteer, or governmental fire department or brigade. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-04).
• Education: Four years of education above the high school level in an accredited college or university in Fire Science, Fire Training, or other related fields of study.
• Combination of Education and Experience: A combination of education and experience may be used to qualify for this position as long as the computed percentage of the requirements is at least 100%.

To occupy this position at the GS-05 level, you must possess and continue to maintain the following certifications at the time of appointment:

• Firefighter I
• Firefighter II
• HAZMAT Operations
• HAZMAT Awareness
• Healthcare Provider/Basic Life Support certification

GS-06 Level

• Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience including assisting in controlling and extinguishing fires; implementing or providing training in fire protection and prevention; operation of fire communications equipment; and experience operating emergency vehicles under adverse weather and/or traffic conditions. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-05).

To occupy this position at the GS-06 level, you must possess and continue to maintain the following certifications at the time of appointment:

• Firefighter I
• Firefighter II
• HAZMAT Operations
• HAZMAT Awareness
• Healthcare Provider/Basic Life Support certification
• Driver Operator - Pumper

GS-07 Level

• Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience including controlling and extinguishing fires; performing rescue operations and inspections to detect, reduce, and eliminate fire hazards; operating fire communications equipment; providing training in fire protection and prevention; controlling hazardous materials incidents; experience operating emergency vehicles under adverse weather and/or traffic conditions; and experience performing patient examinations and providing patient care. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-06).

To occupy this position at the GS-07 level, you must possess and continue to maintain the following certifications at the time of appointment:

• Firefighter I
• Firefighter II
• HAZMAT Operations
• HAZMAT Awareness
• EMT-Basic (Must meet Washington State EMT and/or National Registry requirements)
• Driver Operator - Pumper
• Driver Operator - Mobile Water Supply

Additional Requirements

• Certifications must be through DoD Fire and Emergency Services Certification System, International Fire Service Accreditation Congress (IFSAC), or the Fire Service Professional Qualifications System (PRO-Board) in accordance with DoD 6055.06-M, and a State or National Registry EMT Certification indicating a future expiration date when applicable.
• Maximum Entry Age (MEA): The MEA for Firefighters is 37. An employee must be hired by the last day of the month they reach 37.
• Maximum Reentry Age: Employees previously serving in a covered position may be rehired past the MEA if they can complete 20 years of covered service by their mandatory retirement age (age 57 for firefighters).
• Waivers to Maximum Entry Age: Waivers may be approved by local Command under specific circumstances.
• Foreign Education: If using education completed in foreign colleges or universities, you must show credentials evaluated by a private organization specializing in interpretation of foreign education programs, deemed equivalent to a U.S. education program.
• Male applicants born after December 31, 1959, must complete a Pre-Employment Certification Statement for Selective Service Registration.
• Proof of U.S. Citizenship is required.
• Direct Deposit of Pay is required.
