Firefighter/Apparatus Operator
About the role
New Hanover County is seeking a full-time Firefighter/Apparatus Operator to join our dedicated team of emergency responders. The position involves protecting life and property by responding to emergencies, securing scenes, extinguishing fires, salvaging structures, and providing basic emergency medical care.
Responsibilities
- Respond as the primary apparatus operator to reports of emergencies, including fires, emergency medical requests, technical rescue incidents, hazardous materials response, and other situations.
- Perform maintenance on vehicles and fire stations.
- Conduct pre-plan fire inspections.
- Act in the absence of the Company Officer on assigned shifts.
- Represent Fire Services to the public at various events.
Requirements
- High School diploma or equivalent, and four (4) years of related firefighting experience or three (3) years with New Hanover County Fire Services; or an equivalent combination of training and experience.
- NC Driver's License and good driving record.
- Firefighter accredited certification through IFSAC or Pro Board (NFPA 1001).
- Driver Operator Pumps accredited certification through IFSAC or Pro Board.
- Emergency Vehicle Driver accredited certification through IFSAC or Pro Board.
- Technical Rescuer Common Passenger Vehicle Technician accredited certification through IFSAC or ProBoard (NFPA Standard 1006, 2021).
- Technical Rescuer Vehicle accredited certification through IFSAC or ProBoard (NFPA Chapter 10).
- Technical Rescuer VMR accredited certification through IFSAC or ProBoard (NFPA Standard 1006, 2008).
- Fire & Life Safety Educator Level 1 accredited certification through IFSAC or Pro Board.
Qualifications
- High School diploma or equivalent.
- Four (4) years of related firefighting experience or three (3) years with New Hanover County Fire Services.

Pay
Starting pay equivalent to $65,128.74, with naturally accrued overtime and holiday pay.
Schedule
Rotating 24-hour shifts from 7AM-7AM, including weekends and holidays.
