About the role

Responds to fire emergencies, rescues, hazardous material, and medical calls on a military installation. Performs 24-hour standby for fire suppression and rescue operations under potentially stressful and dangerous conditions.

Responsibilities

  • Operate fire apparatus and related equipment.
  • Perform preventive maintenance on vehicles, tools, protective clothing, and assigned equipment.
  • Participate in training and evaluation exercises as required.
  • Provide medical assistance at the first responder or higher (EMR) levels.
  • Assume command of the emergency scene in the absence of a Senior Fire Officer until relieved.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by higher fire authorities.

Requirements

  • High school diploma.
  • Firefighter II (IFSAC/ProBoard) training certification.
  • Valid South Carolina state driver’s license; ability to obtain a federal government driver’s license if required.
  • Must meet NFPA-1582 physical standards and ability to wear self-contained breathing apparatus (SCBA).
  • Basic knowledge of fire apparatus operations and driving skills; must meet NFPA 1002 standards within six months of employment.
  • Basic working knowledge of Hazardous Materials Operations and First-Aid techniques.
  • Broad working knowledge of structural firefighting and rescue techniques.
  • Working knowledge of Fire Prevention procedures and practices.
  • Ability to perform assigned duties and lift 100 lbs. six feet high.
  • Must pass a Firefighter Physical (NFPA 1500), drug testing, and background check for continued employment.

Schedule

Three shifts, each working 24 hours on/off, with an average workweek of 53 hours and 106 hours per scheduled pay period.
