About the Role

This position involves training for emergency response, including fire suppression, rescue operations, and emergency medical services. Fire Recruits participate in station maintenance, equipment upkeep, and ongoing training while adhering to safety protocols.

Responsibilities

  • Participates in training related to alarms and assists in fire suppression, including rescue, entry, ventilating, and salvage work.
  • May drive fire truck, ambulance, or other emergency vehicles to scenes; responsible for safe operation at all times.
  • Assists in clean-up and overhaul work after fires are extinguished.
  • Performs maintenance, minor repairs, and clean-up of fire and emergency medical equipment, vehicles, apparatus, station, and grounds.
  • Provides emergency medical services within the scope of certification and skills.
  • Cleans and restocks equipment/supplies in vehicles after each emergency run.
  • Participates in continuing training, department instruction, and wellness programs.
  • May assist other city departments as needed.
  • Uses computers to update logs, lists, and records.
  • Observes all safety rules and procedures.
  • Performs other assigned duties.

Requirements

  • High school graduation or equivalent (some college coursework in fire sciences is desirable).
  • EMT Paramedic certification from the Texas Department of State Health Services.
  • Appropriate Texas driver’s license and a good driving record.
  • Must obtain a basic firefighter certification within 6 months of employment.
  • Must be able to lawfully report for emergency duty from residence within one hour.

Skills & Abilities

  • Knowledge of: City and county geography, elementary physics, chemistry, mechanics, firefighting principles, hydraulics for fire suppression, and federal/state/local rules affecting Fire/EMS operations.
  • Skill in: Operating emergency vehicles safely.
  • Physical Ability to: Swim; lift and maneuver up to 165 lbs (e.g., hoses, bunker gear, air packs, ladders); climb ladders; perform CPR; wear protective equipment; and perform strenuous work in adverse conditions (e.g., varying weather, smoke-filled environments).
  • Mental Ability to: Tolerate working at heights and in confined spaces for prolonged periods.
  • Additional Abilities: Operate department vehicles/equipment, read maps, maintain accurate records, establish cooperative relationships, and effectively manage individuals under stress.

Working Conditions

May be exposed to toxic or hazardous materials or work in areas where such materials are stored.
