About the role
This entry-level role offers hands-on design, analysis, and project execution experience in fire protection systems, with mentorship, training, and growth opportunities from day one. You will assist with the analysis, design, and implementation oversight of fire protection systems in buildings, supporting project planning, quality control, and multidisciplinary coordination. The team supports work across public-safety, industrial, and federal facility applications.

Responsibilities
- Assist in the design and analysis of fire alarm, fire suppression, and smoke control systems, using engineering software and tools to develop designs, specifications, and calculations according to code requirements and IMEG standards.
- Interact with clients to understand needs, gather project requirements, communicate technical information effectively, and build professional relationships.
- Work as part of a project team to support consulting projects and assist with project planning and scheduling to meet deadlines and objectives.
- Assist with documenting design decisions and client instructions while monitoring project design progress.
- Analyze low to medium complexity engineering tasks and propose innovative solutions with support from senior engineers and consultants.
- Collaborate with senior engineers and consultants to develop practical and efficient solutions.
- Participate in quality control processes to help ensure engineering designs and solutions meet IMEG quality standards, industry standards, and client requirements.
- Stay up to date with industry trends, emerging technologies, and best practices in fire protection engineering, and contribute to research, development, and innovation efforts within IMEG.
- Prioritize safety in all aspects of engineering work by identifying and helping mitigate potential safety risks associated with fire protection systems.
- Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams, including other engineers, architects, and project managers, to deliver integrated solutions that meet project goals.
Requirements
- Bachelor of Science (BS) Degree in Fire Protection Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or equivalent required.
- Prior internship experience in the building design consulting industry preferred.
- Engineering in Training (EIT) License preferred.
- National Institute for Certification in Engineering Technologies (NICET) Level I or II certification in Fire Alarm Systems or Water-Based Systems Layout preferred.
Skills
- Knowledge of design techniques, tools, and concepts involved in the production of technical plans and specifications.
- Strong technical and analytical skills including knowledge in principles of thermodynamics, fire dynamics, heat transfer, and fluid mechanics as it relates to fire protection systems design in fire alarm, fire suppression, and smoke control systems for buildings.
- Knowledge of industry standard engineering software and tools including hydraulic simulation and intelligibility software.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
- Ability to work collaboratively in a team environment.
- Attention to detail and problem-solving skills.
- Eagerness to learn and adapt to new challenges.
- Basic knowledge in the use of BIM software.
- Ability to clearly communicate in both oral and written communication to individuals or groups.

Pay
State of Massachusetts Salary Range: $75,000–$83,000 per year. The range listed represents the base pay IMEG reasonably expects to pay for this position in the work location identified at the time of posting. For positions available in multiple locations, the minimums and maximums may vary based on work location. Individual compensation will be determined based on job-related factors, including the candidate’s experience, education, knowledge, skills, abilities, and licensure and certifications.
