About the role
IMEG is hiring a Fire Protection Engineering Intern in Des Moines, IA to support engineering analysis, design, and implementation oversight of fire protection systems in buildings. Over 10-12 weeks, you will assist with real project work alongside experienced engineers and consultants in a paid, mentored internship. This opportunity supports work connected to public-safety, industrial, and federal facility applications while helping teams meet project goals and client expectations.
Locations: Des Moines, IA; Louisville, KY; and Boston, MA.
Responsibilities
- Assist with design portions of fire protection systems for building projects according to code and IMEG standards
- Research commercially available equipment and supporting resources
- Support project budgeting and collaborate with cross-functional teams to meet project goals and client expectations
- Help maintain client relations, project design notebooks, and permanent record documentation
- Coordinate design and schedule information with architectural, structural, electrical, mechanical, technology, clerical, and equipment supplier teams
- Document design decisions, meetings, and client instructions while monitoring project progress
- Review project documents for accuracy and completeness before final check
- Assist with preparation and issuance of addendum information
- Conduct periodic job site observations and support contract-required services
Requirements
- Completed at least 2 years towards a Bachelor of Science (BS) Degree in Fire Protection Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or equivalent
- Prior internship experience in the building design consulting industry preferred
Skills
- Strong interest in design consulting
- Proficient with MS Office Suite including Word, Excel, and Outlook
- Skilled in AutoCAD and/or Building Information Modeling (BIM) software
- Ability to clearly communicate in both oral and written communication to individuals or groups

Pay
State of Massachusetts Pay Range: $22.00–$24.00 per hour. The range listed represents the base pay IMEG reasonably expects to pay for this position in the work location identified at the time of posting. Individual compensation will be determined based on job-related factors, including the candidate’s experience, education, knowledge, skills, abilities, and licensure and certifications.
