Responsibilities

  • Develop and deliver fire safety and prevention educational programs to local schools, community groups and members of the general public.
  • Conduct routine inspections of buildings and property for fire hazards, efficiency of fire protective equipment, adequacy of fire exits and general compliance with fire prevention laws and standards.
  • Advise property owners on the removal of fire hazards and enforce compliance to correct hazards.
  • Respond to requests and inquiries from the general public.
  • Maintain a variety of records, files and maps related to fire prevention and safety activities and programs.
  • Enter a variety of information into a computer terminal.
  • Perform related duties and responsibilities as required.

Requirements

  • Graduation from high school or completion of a GED supplemented by specialized training in fire science, fire prevention, investigation, or a related field; OR an equivalent combination of education, training and experience as determined by Human Resources.
  • One year experience in non-sworn education, prevention, and inspection work is desirable.

Qualifications

  • Must have a valid driver's license.
  • Possession of a current certification in CPR within 3 months of hire.
  • Possession of a current ICC Fire Inspector 1 certification or Nevada State Fire Marshal Fire Inspector certification is preferred.

Knowledge and Skills

  • Basic fire hazards, related prevention and abatement methods.
  • Principles of fire prevention and safety education.
  • Codes, laws, policies and procedures relating to fire prevention.
  • Safe work practices and procedures.
  • Public relations as they relate to obtaining cooperation and compliance to fire codes and laws.

Physical Demands and Working Environment

  • The physical demands described herein are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of the job.
  • Duties require sufficient mobility to work in an inspection/office setting and use standard office equipment, (including a computer), vision to read printed materials, and hearing and speech to communicate in person or over the telephone, and must be mobile, able to sit, stoop and climb.
  • Must be able to climb ladders.
  • Able to work in limited visibility spaces and confined areas.

Supervision Received and Exercised

  • Under general supervision - Incumbents at this level are given assignments and objectives that are governed by specifically outlined work methods and a sequence of steps, which are explained in general terms. The responsibility for achieving the work objectives, however, rests with a superior. Immediate supervision is not consistent, but checks are integrated into work processes and/or reviews are frequent enough to ensure compliance with instructions.

Conditions of Employment

  • All new employees will serve a probationary period of twelve (12) months. Such employees are not subject to the collective bargaining agreement and may be laid off or discharged during this period for any reason. Continued employment is contingent upon all required licenses and certificates being maintained in active status without suspension or revocation.
  • New employees are required to submit to a fingerprint based background investigation which cost the new employee $47.00 and a drug screen which costs $36.50. Employment is contingent upon passing the background and the drug screen.
  • Comeplete Section 1 of the Form I-9 along with the required proof of their right to work in the United States and proof of their identity prior to starting employment.
  • Carson City participates in E-Verify and will provide the Social Security Administration (SSA) and, if necessary, the Department of Homeland Security (DHS), with information from each applicant's Form I-9 to confirm work authorization.
