Fire Fighter New Hire

About the role

This is the first of eleven levels in the fire series. Incumbents fight fires and provide emergency medical care to citizens.

Responsibilities

  • Respond to all types of fires and other emergencies; provide emergency medical care at a basic and advanced life support level; extinguish fires; and perform related life and property protection.
  • Ensure the proper condition, maintenance, and appearance of apparatus and equipment; prepare apparatus and equipment for immediate response.
  • Participate in training activities, including daily physical fitness training and on-going fire, rescue, and medical training.
  • Accept emergency and non-emergency calls; determine appropriate response.
  • Maintain logs of activities and enter data into computer system; prepare related reports.
  • Participate in the daily functions of the fire station, which may include housekeeping, cooking, and/or other related duties.
  • Drive emergency vehicles to respond to emergency calls from citizens.
  • Perform other duties of a similar nature or level.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or GED equivalent.
  • Possession of a valid Class D Driver's License with F Endorsement.

Skills

  • Knowledge of emergency medical care and physical fitness principles.
  • Skill in maintaining physical fitness and preparing records and reports.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills for interaction with coworkers, supervisors, and the public.

Physical Requirements

The work is very heavy, requiring exerting in excess of 100 pounds of force occasionally, in excess of 50 pounds frequently, and/or in excess of 20 pounds constantly to move objects. The following physical abilities are required:

  • Balancing: Maintaining body equilibrium to prevent falling while walking, standing, or crouching on narrow, slippery, or erratically moving surfaces.
  • Climbing: Ascending or descending ladders, stairs, scaffolding, ramps, poles, and similar structures using feet, legs, hands, and arms.
  • Crawling: Moving about on hands, knees, hands, and feet.
  • Crouching: Bending the body downward and forward by bending leg and spine.
  • Feeling: Perceiving attributes of objects, such as size, shape, temperature, or texture by touch.
  • Fingering: Working primarily with fingers (e.g., picking, pinching, typing).
  • Grasping: Applying pressure to an object with the fingers and palm.
  • Handling: Picking, holding, or working primarily with the whole hand.
  • Hearing: Perceiving sounds at normal speaking levels with or without correction; receiving detailed information through oral communication.
  • Kneeling: Bending legs at the knee to rest on one or both knees.
  • Lifting: Raising objects from a lower to a higher position or moving objects horizontally.

You must be at least 21 years of age on or before January 11, 2027, to apply and be considered for this position.

Pay

The salary posted is the salary throughout the first phase of your training.
