Fire Alarm Technician II

Hiring Department: Environmental Health and Safety | Reports To: Electronics Supervisor for EH&S | Location: El Paso, Texas (On Site) | Hours: 40 hours per week, Monday–Friday 8:00 AM–5:00 PM | FLSA status: Non-exempt

About the Role

This position is part of the Fire and Life Safety Team and collaborates with campus partners to ensure compliance with the NFPA Life Safety Code, NFPA Fire Code, International Building and Fire Codes, and applicable state, local, and federal regulations. The role involves installing, inspecting, testing, repairing, and maintaining fire alarm systems to ensure compliance with all laws and codes.

Responsibilities

• Perform skilled fire prevention, risk reduction, and fire inspection duties, including installation, programming, configuration, maintenance, troubleshooting, diagnostics, and repair of fire alarm and fire suppression systems.
• Perform emergency services and schedule preventative maintenance and inspections on fire alarm panels and peripheral devices (power supplies, wiring, initiating, and notification devices).
• Ensure adequate permitting and inspections of all processes.
• Collaborate with the Fire & Life Safety Department to plan, organize, and conduct fire and life safety public education, incorporating stakeholders from the UTEP community.
• Assist in investigations of fire incidents on university property, write investigative reports on origin and cause, and coordinate with UTEP Police, UT System Risk Management, and the Texas State Fire Marshal’s Office.
• Review construction/renovation plans and fire protection system plans for adherence to fire alarm and life safety codes and NFPA standards.
• Assist in coordinating and tracking individual plan reviews/approvals to ensure timely and code-compliant conclusions.
• Meet with architects, engineers, contractors, agencies, and community stakeholders to advise on fire alarm and fire prevention issues affecting development and construction.
• Provide technical expertise on fire alarms, fire protection infrastructure planning and design, and placement of fire and life safety equipment.
• Respond to emergencies, determine hazards, and recommend corrective actions.
• Available for "On Call" duty.
• Utilize Microsoft Office software and institutional systems.
• Comply with all State and University policies.
• Perform other duties as assigned, including roles as Fire Inspector, Plans Examiner, Fire and Life Safety Educator, or Fire Investigator.

Incident Management Training: ICS-100, ICS-200, ICS-300, ICS-400, ICS-700, ICS-800.

Requirements

• Associate’s degree or equivalent from a two-year college or technical school in a relevant field.
• Three years of experience related to the duties and responsibilities, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Preferred Qualifications

• Knowledge of Fire Alarm Panels and NICET Level I certification.
• Familiarity with NFPA 101 Life Safety Code, NFPA 72 Fire Alarm Codes, networking connections, fiber optics, and NFPA 70 E.

Work Environment & Physical Demands

• Frequently required to stand, walk, sit, use hands, reach with arms, climb, balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl.
• Must frequently lift and move up to 50 pounds.
• Requires close, distance, color, peripheral, and depth perception, and ability to adjust focus.
• May require wearing Personal Protective Equipment (PPE), including steel-toe electrical hazard shoes, eye protection, ear protection, and back belts.
• Exposure to high, precarious places, outdoor weather conditions, electrical shock risks, wet/humid conditions, moving mechanical parts, fumes, airborne particles, toxic/caustic chemicals, extreme temperatures, explosives, radiation, and vibration.
• Moderate noise levels in the work environment.
