Financial Reporting Manager
Location: Kansas City, MO (onsite) | 6-month contract
About the role
The Financial Reporting Manager manages the financial reporting team within the Corporate Accounting/Finance department. This team is responsible for the accounting of marketing and admin expenses, interfaces between the General Ledger (GL) and Accounts Payable (AP) subledger, corporate investments, intercompany eliminations, corporate cost allocations, and other areas.
The Financial Reporting Manager is also responsible for the preparation of the monthly financial statements and performing an analysis over financial results. This position reviews financial statements and evaluates disclosure requirements for the financials, ensures timely close of the monthly GL module, and accurate financial reporting.
This role reviews audit-related deliverables, ensures the financial reporting team meets audit deadlines, resolves journal entry issues, and develops process improvements. The manager also reviews business transactions to ensure proper reflection in the general ledger, researches and implements accounting procedures per GAAP, and advises employees on GAAP requirements.
The Financial Reporting Manager supervises staff, provides training, completes performance reviews, and handles recruitment. They serve as a technical advisor, respond to accounting questions, and provide ad hoc reporting for executive management. The role involves interpreting and establishing policies, supporting departmental business plans, and attending project meetings as needed.
Responsibilities
- Prepare and review monthly financial statements and perform financial result analysis.
- Review journal entries, reconciliations, overhead analyses, and AP corrections prepared by the financial reporting team.
- Ensure timely and accurate close of the monthly GL module and financial reporting.
- Evaluate disclosure requirements for financial statements and annual reports.
- Review audit-related deliverables and ensure compliance with audit deadlines.
- Resolve journal entry issues and develop process improvements for efficiency.
- Research, develop, and implement accounting procedures in response to GAAP requirements.
- Advise employees on GAAP requirements and provide guidance where needed.
- Prepare and present analytical evaluations of account fluctuations monthly and annually.
- Supervise, train, and evaluate staff; handle recruitment and performance reviews.
- Serve as a technical advisor and provide senior-level input on accounting issues.
- Respond to accounting questions and resolve discrepancies.
- Provide ad hoc reporting for Accounting or Division Executive Management.
- Interpret and establish organizational policies, procedures, and strategic goals.
- Support departmental business plans and determine objectives and requirements.
- Develop and implement department tools and workflows to increase efficiency.
- Manage the financial reporting team’s involvement in system testing for patches and upgrades.
Requirements
- Bachelor’s Degree in Accounting or Finance.
- 8+ years of accounting experience with significant technical skills in financial reporting.
- Experience researching complex accounting issues.
- Experience in auditing or serving as a key audit contact.
- Previous supervisory experience preferred.
- Expert-level proficiency in Excel.
- Strong oral and written communication skills, with the ability to present complex information clearly.
- Strong interpersonal and project management skills.
- Ability to balance and prioritize multiple projects simultaneously.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint).
- Certified Public Accountant (CPA) strongly preferred.
- Must be legally authorized to work permanently in the U.S. without sponsorship.
