As a back office Financial Counselor at Willamette Valley Cancer Institute and Research Center, you will assist patients in understanding their insurance coverage for treatments, review benefits and coverage details, and help them anticipate out-of-pocket expenses. You will also support the cash posting team with payment processing and daily deposits.
Responsibilities
- Obtain insurance coverage information and demographics prior to patient treatment; educate patients on insurance coverage, benefits, co-pays, deductibles, and out-of-pocket expenses.
- Complete Patient Cost Estimate forms based on diagnosis, estimated insurance coverage, and financial assistance.
- Prepare and review reimbursement and liability forms for patient signature and forward them to the billing office.
- Review patient account balances and notify the front desk of patients requiring financial counseling.
- Ensure accurate entry of patient co-pay amounts into the system for proper front-desk collection.
- Assist the cash posting team with payment posting and daily batch reconciliation.
- Provide in-person coverage for patient-facing financial counselors as needed.
- Adhere to confidentiality, state, federal, and HIPAA laws regarding patient records.
- Maintain updated manuals, logs, forms, and documentation.
- Perform additional duties as assigned.
Qualifications
- High school diploma or equivalent required.
- Minimum one (1) year of medical office, insurance verification, claims, or billing experience.
- Proficiency with computer systems and Microsoft Office (Word and Excel).
- Demonstrated knowledge of CPT and HCPS coding applications.
- Clear verbal communication skills with appropriate terminology.
- Must successfully complete required e-learning courses within 90 days of hire.
Physical Demands
- Regularly required to sit or stand, talk, or hear during scheduled business hours.
- Full range of body motion, including handling and lifting patients, manual and finger dexterity, and eye-hand coordination.
- Extensive periods of standing and walking.
- Occasional lifting and carrying of items up to 40 lbs.
- Requires corrected vision and hearing to normal range.
Work Environment
- Exposure to communicable diseases, toxic substances, ionizing radiation, and medical preparations common in an oncology/hematology clinic.
- In-person interaction with co-workers, management, and clients.
- Minimal travel by automobile to office sites may be required.
Pay
The general pay scale for this position is $19 - $40.54 per hour. The actual hiring rate depends on factors such as prior work experience, education, job responsibilities, location, and work performance.
Schedule
Full-time, onsite position (FTE 1.0).
