Financial Counselor
Position Summary
The Financial Counselor is a member of a healthcare team responsible for working under the general direction of the Director. The responsibilities for this position are as follows:
- Verifies insurance benefits
- Affords case management for uninsured or underinsured patients referred to the Center regarding their medical needs
- Reviews, evaluates, and coordinates health insurance benefits available through public and private health coverage programs to ensure payment for scheduled clinic services
- Provides support to registrars and other personnel to assure all payment options have been explored and available
- Identifies eligible pregnant women and enrolls them in clinic and related hospital services as part of the pre-natal program
Job Qualifications/Requirements
- Educational Background: Associate or bachelor’s degree preferred.
- Experience: Minimum 2-4 years’ experience in a medical office environment; experience with insurance billing, collections, and working knowledge of third-party payor procedures and practices in a medical office; experience with Windows applications, proficient use of computer, Microsoft Word, and Microsoft Excel.
- Skills: Strong communication, verbal and written and interpersonal skills; ability to analyze and solve problems with limited assistance; ability to maintain confidentiality; familiarity with health care financial management systems and services; knowledge of community resources; some understanding of health services, insurance, business office operations, medical terminology; excellent customer service skills with a caring and understanding attitude.
- Languages: Knowledge and use of the English language.
- Mathematical Skills: Basic math skills.
- Reasoning Abilities: Critical thinking, analytical and problem-solving skills.
