About the role

A Financial Counselor at Frye Regional Medical Center is responsible for maintaining and processing patient accounts, counseling patients about the admission and discharge processes, and managing payment methods.

Responsibilities

  • Counsel patients (or responsible parties) to establish payment methods.
  • Contact patients in advance of admission to obtain missing information, particularly patient signatures for accepting obligation to pay.
  • Estimate and inform patients of the portion of the bill they must pay directly.
  • Establish a payment plan for patients who cannot pay the estimated portion of the bill upon discharge.
  • Identify and report to the manager patients with histories of payment problems.
  • Ensure completeness of pre-admission and admission information, following through as needed, to obtain and document missing information/signatures prior to the patient's admission date.
  • Accurately interpret insurance policy provisions and calculate the self-pay portion of the patient's bill based on expected length of stay and services rendered.
  • Advise patients of their self-pay obligations and ensure that they sign the designated forms.
  • Collect self-pay monies in advance, upon entry, or at discharge according to circumstances. Ensure that a mutually agreed-upon payment agreement is documented and signed by all parties, in compliance with established guidelines and procedures.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent preferred.
  • Proficient in using software programs.
  • Excellent customer service and telephone skills are a must.
  • Minimum of one year of business or related experience including bookkeeping with use of calculating equipment and collection of monies is required.
  • Hospital or medical business office experience preferred.
  • Medical terminology preferred.

Qualifications

  • Education: High school diploma or equivalent preferred.

Skills

  • Excellent communication skills.
  • Knowledge of medical billing and coding.
  • Ability to manage multiple tasks simultaneously.
