Job Description

A Financial counselor serves as the liaison between the patient and the practice by coordinating payments, assisting with financial responsibilities, and ensuring compliance with insurance coverage.

Primary Job Duties & Responsibilities

  • Maintains coordination with insurance companies on pre-certification and prior authorization processes, including peer-to-peer interactions and appeals.
  • Reviews and establishes patient financial responsibility for upcoming treatments and services.
  • Verifies patient insurance benefits and updates EMR and billing software accordingly.
  • Communicates with patients about insurance coverage and financial responsibilities, including discussing forms and payment plans.
  • Works with external entities to ensure timely completion of forms and items needed.
  • Assists patients with applying for financial aid and grant-funded programs.
  • Understands and complies with relevant laws and regulations regarding patient care, rights, safety, billing, and collections.
  • Ensures work area and records are maintained in a neat and orderly manner.
  • Performs other duties and projects as assigned.

Job Qualifications And Requirements

  • Education: High school diploma or GED required. Further education or degree preferred.
  • Certifications/Licenses: Two years prior experience in healthcare field, preferably in a clinical or business office setting required. Prior healthcare customer service, medical terminology, insurance verification, pre-certification and prior authorization, cash handling, and monetary collection experience preferred.
  • Core Capabilities: Solid problem-solving, analysis, decision-making, planning, time management, and organizational skills. Detail-oriented with the ability to exercise independent judgment. Interpersonal skills, emotional intelligence, diplomacy, tact, conflict management, delegation, and diversity awareness. Effective communication skills (oral, written, presentation), active listening, and balanced feedback. Customer service and organizational awareness. Self-management, including effective time management, prioritization, stress management, and professional development. Computer proficiency in MS Office Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook.
