About the Role
The Lead Filler Operator is responsible for teaching and guiding all lower-level Operators, overseeing the filling and packing of products according to work order specifications, and ensuring compliance with Good Manufacturing Practices (GMPs) and safety procedures. This role focuses on maintaining a safe, efficient, and high-quality production environment while meeting daily work order goals.
Responsibilities
- Practice, teach, and enforce Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs), Good Manufacturing Practices (GMPs), safety, and quality policies.
- Oversee processing, changeovers, clean-up, and sanitation procedures for department equipment per SOPs.
- Create, implement, and maintain an effective filler operator training program and schedule.
- Develop and train high-impact filler operators in all aspects of the job, including new employee onboarding.
- Train operators on safe and efficient setup and operation of filler machines, HMIs, PLCs, and related machinery.
- Perform sterilization and manual washing of machine components, including COP, CIP, and SIP.
- Monitor and maintain product and process quality, making necessary adjustments.
- Oversee regular quality testing, such as dye testing and seal integrity checks.
- Assist with minor repairs and maintenance of machines.
- Document production details, including weights, teardowns, downtime, and sanitation logs.
- Perform fill volume and weight checks, adjusting as necessary.
- Inspect and remove defective cartons to prevent machine jams.
- Maintain and refill supplies of caps and cases to ensure continuous operation.
- Inspect cap glue patterns and case integrity for proper sealing.
- Understand basic computer and control systems, as well as aseptic manufacturing processes.
- Complete assigned cleaning tasks per the master cleaning schedule.
- Comply with all GMPs, SOPs, SSOPs, SQF, HACCP, and safety procedures.
- Perform additional duties as assigned.
Requirements
- High school diploma or GED, and/or 2 years of experience in a manufacturing environment (preferred).
- Proficiency in English and basic math (addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, weights, and measures).
- Knowledge of basic computer and control systems.
- Mechanical aptitude for assembling, troubleshooting, and performing minor repairs on manufacturing equipment.
- Strong written and oral communication skills.
- Basic knowledge of food processing.
- Team-oriented with the ability to build strong working relationships, resolve conflicts, and adapt to change.
- Ability to manage time efficiently and work under changing demands.
- Follow verbal and written instructions accurately.
- Strong work ethic, motivation, and hands-on problem-solving skills.
- Attention to detail, accuracy, and quality.
Physical Demands
- Ability to stand and/or walk for long periods, reach, push, pull, lift, climb, bend, stoop, squat, and use manual dexterity with tools and equipment (e.g., filler machines, scales, pallet jacks, hoses, forklifts).
- Ability to safely lift up to 50 pounds frequently and move heavier weights using proper equipment or team lifting.
- Vision, hearing, and speaking abilities to meet performance standards.
Work Environment
- Work in an environment with dust, odors, moderate noise, and temperature/ventilation variations.
- Wear required safety and protective clean room apparel (e.g., safety glasses, gloves, hair nets, face masks or respirators, and uniforms).
