Crops: Cabbage – heavy labor field work to harvest cabbage in preparation for value-added processing.
Responsibilities
- Walk in uneven furrows behind a harvesting conveyor belt to cut produce.
- Determine size and quality of cabbage under direction of the field foreman.
- Use a harvesting knife with a coring attachment to cut cabbage heads from roots while bending at the waist.
- Trim outer leaves and core cabbage by hand or machine mechanism to prepare for packaging.
- Place cored cabbage on a belt where it is inspected, further cored, and loose leaves removed before being dropped into bins.
- Sort cabbage to bin capacity or field pack as needed.
- Cut and place cabbage on a table for packers to tie, spot wash, sort, wrap, seal, and place into cartons or totes.
- Construct cartons or totes by unfolding and bending material to form boxes, then label and mark as required.
- Repeat the cutting, coring, and packing process; may also harvest whole cabbage heads without coring.
- Stack filled cartons, totes, or bins (up to 50 lbs) onto pallets on the harvester or trailer deck.
- Handle empty pallets (up to 95 lbs) with assistance and assemble pallets as needed.
- Assist with field cleanup before, during, and after harvest, including trash pickup and discarding used cartons.
- Act as a safety monitor when equipment is turning in the field to begin a new pass.
Requirements
- Minimum of 1 month of work experience with produce, including harvest work.
- Ability to lift up to 50 pounds frequently.
- Proficiency in using hand tools, including cutting knives, shears, and long-handled hoes.
- Must not be color blind (ability to distinguish crop colors is required).
- Ability to work in conditions where skin and clothing may become heavily soiled with mud, water, grease, etc.
Additional Information
In the event of a work-related injury, the company will provide a temporary work assignment closely related to the primary duties described, pending physician clearance and specific work limitations. This temporary assignment is not a permanent position and will accommodate the injured worker’s recovery needs.
