Field Technology Technician - Construction Technology
Proof of high school diploma or General Education Degree (GED). Minimum of six months of related experience in a similar role and environment; 2–5 years of heavy equipment technician experience (especially in a dealership) and Caterpillar work experience are strongly preferred. Valid driver’s license and ability to speak, read, write, and comprehend English required. Must own and maintain required personal tools. Pay rate and position grade will be determined based on applicable differentials, experience, and skill.
About the role
Install, troubleshoot, and repair 2D & 3D machine control and site positioning technology for the heavy earthmoving industry. Perform software updates, system calibrations, and diagnostics on machine control and site positioning platforms to ensure optimal accuracy and reliability. Analyze and resolve hardware and software issues involving sensors, displays, receivers, wiring harnesses, and control modules.
Responsibilities
- Install, troubleshoot, and repair telematics devices; perform hardware and software updates as necessary.
- Perform intermediate-level troubleshooting of digital and analog electronic components, electrical wiring, and related mechanical systems.
- Travel to client locations, including construction, mining, and landfill sites.
- Prepare detailed service reports and submit to billing department in a timely manner.
- Maintain company vehicle and equipment in optimal condition; uphold professional image.
- Travel out of town for days at a time and work evenings and/or weekends as necessary.
- Work safely at all times; adhere to all applicable safety policies and company procedures.
- Perform complex installations for two or more product lines.
- Assist with training of new technicians.
- Learn and utilize company business systems for research, placing orders, and tracking job-related activities.
- Assist Technicians I and III with grade control installations as needed.
- Follow standard operating procedures; perform preventative maintenance duties as needed.
- Schedule own work for maximum efficiency and effectiveness in service planner’s absence.
- Develop client relations that enhance and inspire trust in the company brand.
- Complete product-specific training as instructed.
- Maintain open communications with manager and peers; clarify instructions and solve technical issues.

Skills
- Strong computer and phone skills: email, text, Microsoft Office, internet search.
- Ability to use a laptop to access work order systems, email, order parts, perform software updates, locate installation/repair data, and complete registry editing.
- Ability to read and interpret electrical system diagrams for installations and repairs.
- Knowledge of analog and digital sensors and their application to augment GPS data.
- Ability to troubleshoot electrical wiring on heavy equipment; knowledge of multi-meter use for voltage, current, and continuity testing.
- Knowledge of GPS and telematics device functionality and application.
- Intermediate mechanical skills; knowledge of fabrication practices; ability to use hand and portable power tools.
- Adequate communication skills to schedule and explain repairs, maintenance, and updates to clients.
- Ability to work collaboratively in a team-oriented manner.
- Ability to travel to remote locations, stay overnight, and work weekends and after hours.
- Ability to make decisions and work independently.
- Proficient rebuilding/repairing machinery including hydraulics, electrical, GPS systems, powertrain, engines, Tier IV Emissions systems, failure analysis, and warranty claims procedures.
Qualifications
- Proof of high school diploma or General Education Degree (GED).
- Minimum of 2–3 years of experience with common automotive systems and equipment.
- Ability to achieve MSHA certification.
- Current driver’s license.
- Must be able to communicate (speak, read, comprehend, write) in English.
- Must successfully complete a skills assessment (eTRAIN test).
- Excellent client service skills.
- Acceptable attendance to meet all company standards and requirements.
Physical Demands
- Regularly required to use hands and fingers, talk, and hear.
- Frequently required to sit, stand, walk, reach with hands and arms, climb or balance, squat or kneel, crouch or crawl, and drive for long periods.
- Must be able to lift and/or move up to 50 pounds.
- Specific vision abilities required: close vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and distance vision.
Work Environment
- Regularly exposed to risk of electrical shock.
- Frequently exposed to moving mechanical parts, high precarious places, extreme cold, extreme heat, and outside weather conditions.
- Occasionally exposed to wet and/or humid conditions, taste or smell.
- Noise level in the work environment is usually loud.
- Machinery and tool operation requires use of safety equipment (e.g., eye safety glasses, hearing protectors).
