About the role

As a Field Technician 3, you will perform and direct construction material testing, excavation observations, and project monitoring. The level of oversight and supervision will vary based on task complexity, as determined by the project manager.

Responsibilities

• Communicate with clients to determine project needs and assist in developing engineering and testing programs.
• Establish and meet project quality requirements; assist in maintaining and improving the materials testing laboratory.
• Oversee and maintain client, project team, and in-house communication during work performance.
• Maintain current working knowledge of applicable regulations, policies, procedures, and technologies.
• Perform field tests and observations of construction materials, including soils, concrete, masonry, bituminous, and reinforcing steel.
• Perform laboratory testing of construction materials, including soils, concrete, masonry, bituminous, and reinforcing steel.
• Assist in training less experienced personnel in routine field work and documentation.
• Conduct soil laboratory tests according to QA procedures; log and classify soil samples in the laboratory or field.
• Maintain project files and job status; assist with report preparation and review.
• Assist in developing and reviewing Standard Operating Procedures for the Quality Assurance Program (QAP).
• Establish, maintain, and build business relationships with clients; aid in company marketing functions.
• Directly or indirectly supervise engineering and technical personnel within your area of assignment.
• Conduct field, laboratory, and office activities in compliance with federal, state, and local regulations, as well as AET’s QA and Health and Safety Policies.
• Increase proficiency in assigned testing; maintain high chargeable productivity and quality of service.
• Properly use and maintain company instruments and equipment; coordinate with staff to improve efficiency and communication.
• Maintain a valid driver’s license and acceptable driving record; some positions may require use of a personal vehicle for company business.
• Maintain compliance with DOT driver regulations and appropriate physicals if required for the position.
• Frequent travel within the regional area; occasional out-of-town travel.
• Work primarily outdoors and away from the main office/laboratory; occasional nights or weekends.
• Perform other tasks as necessary to meet departmental or company goals.

Requirements

• High school diploma or equivalent; two-year or technical degree in a related field preferred.
• Minimum of 5 years of related engineering technician experience with quality control testing of construction materials.
• ACI Concrete Field I certification; ICC masonry, DOT certifications, and reinforced concrete preferred.
• Troxler approved certificate for use of Troxler gauge preferred; other state DOT certifications a plus.
• Detailed knowledge of principles and practices in more than one specialty area, or demonstrated expert knowledge within a specialty area.
• Proficiency in developing timely, accurate, and detailed project documentation and report writing.
• Experience in reviewing test results; proficiency with Microsoft Office (Word and Excel).
• Strong communication skills to convey complex technical information clearly to diverse audiences.
• Ability to interact successfully with a wide variety of people, work effectively in teams, resolve issues constructively, and work independently in the field.
• Capable of physical labor, including work at hazardous waste sites with personal protective equipment.
• Ability to:
  • Frequently lift 30-60 pounds from the floor to 2 feet; occasionally lift 60-100 pounds.
  • Frequently carry 30-60 pounds for 10-30 feet; occasionally carry 60-100 pounds.
  • Stand for up to 8 hours, often on uneven surfaces; move for up to 8 hours with frequent bending and stooping.
• Must be authorized to work for any employer in the U.S. without requiring visa sponsorship now or in the future.

Pay

Base compensation is expected to be in the range of $29.00 - $35.00 per hour based on skill set and experience.

Work Environment

This job primarily operates in a professional office environment and may require field work in outdoor conditions on construction sites with uneven ground and adverse weather. Routine use of standard office equipment such as computers, phones, and photocopiers is required.
