About the Role

The Field Systems Engineer (FSE) is responsible for attending to service needs of bioMerieux customers within their assigned geographic territory, as well as nationally on an as-needed basis. The FSE is a self-starter, delivering a best-in-class customer experience while working remotely without direct supervision and able to conduct overnight travel on short notice.

Responsibilities

  • Promptly respond to customer needs and perform installations, maintenance, upgrades, and repairs using electronic and computer skills to ensure instruments meet specifications.
  • Build trust with customers, promote service agreements, and identify sales opportunities for cross-functional teams.
  • Foster teamwork across service and support teams while driving field service revenue through billable offerings like preventive maintenance and equipment moves.
  • Attend 6–9 weeks of product training at Durham, NC or St. Louis, MO offices within the first year; future trainings occur as needed.
  • Travel for both scheduled and unscheduled customer visits, including overnight stays for wide territories and occasional national travel.
  • Participate in weekend/holiday on-call rotation (~every 5 weeks), requiring local phone availability and potential national travel for instrument support.
  • Complete service work orders, QA checklists, and internal training requirements accurately and on time.
  • Maintain an up-to-date calendar of availability and submit travel expense reports regularly.
  • Follow company policies for fleet vehicle use and upkeep.
  • Maintain spare parts inventory, company-issued vehicle, and assigned equipment (e.g., laptop, tools, test devices) in good condition.
  • Continuously improve technical and interpersonal skills, meet annual priorities, and collaborate with sales and applications teams.
  • Represent bioMerieux professionally, support trade shows as needed, and provide feedback to enhance service capabilities.
  • Perform all work in compliance with company quality procedures and standards.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Engineering, Electronic Technology, Computer Science, Biomedical, or related discipline.
  • 2+ years of professional experience in troubleshooting and/or repair of complex electro-mechanical, electronic, computer, or electrical systems in commercial, industrial, or military settings.
  • Education Substitution: In lieu of a Bachelor’s degree, 6+ years of relevant experience is required.
  • Valid driver’s license in state of residence.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience in troubleshooting biomedical, vacuum systems, host/remote communications, network systems, or similar systems in a clinical laboratory setting.
  • Experience operating independently, managing schedules, customer expectations, and communications without direct oversight.
  • Prior field service role experience.
  • Knowledge of laboratory operations principles and practices.

Working Conditions and Travel

  • Physical requirements: prolonged stationary positions, stair/ladder climbing, wearing PPE, operating heavy machinery, and lifting/moving up to 50 lbs.
  • Travel: Up to 90% domestic travel, including 50% regional travel (non-overnight) Monday through Friday and up to 15% weekend/holiday rotational travel.
  • On-call support: ~15% of annual time, with potential overnight travel for product support.

Pay

The estimated wage range for this field-based role in California is between $35.00 and $47.00 per hour. This role is eligible for a variable annual bonus based on company, team, and individual performance.
