About the Role
As a senior technical expert at Okuma America Corporation, you will be responsible for the installation, repair, troubleshooting, and optimization of Okuma CNC machine tools and automation systems throughout North America. This highly visible, customer-facing role combines advanced mechanical, electrical, CNC, software, and automation expertise with exceptional problem-solving skills. You will work closely with customers, distributors, and internal teams to resolve complex technical issues, support machine installations, and strengthen Okuma's reputation for industry-leading service.
Responsibilities
- Deliver advanced field service support by diagnosing and resolving complex mechanical, electrical, CNC control, software, and automation-related issues.
- Perform on-site troubleshooting, repair, maintenance, and optimization of Okuma machine tools and automated manufacturing systems.
- Support customer operations by identifying root causes and implementing corrective actions to minimize downtime.
- Serve as a technical escalation resource for issues beyond distributor support capabilities.
- Perform machine installations, commissioning, and startup activities for new equipment and advanced manufacturing solutions.
- Install retrofit packages and implement machine upgrades, modifications, and design improvements.
- Verify machine performance through testing, alignment, and system validation procedures.
- Provide technical support to customers and distributors through on-site visits, phone support, email, and remote diagnostic tools.
- Develop technical bulletins, repair procedures, service documentation, and training materials.
- Create detailed service reports that communicate findings, recommendations, and corrective actions.
- Share technical knowledge to strengthen distributor capabilities and improve customer self-sufficiency.
- Partner with customers, distributors, and internal service teams to ensure timely issue resolution and exceptional customer experiences.
- Identify opportunities to improve service processes, enhance equipment performance, and deliver greater customer value.
- Maintain compliance with all company policies, safety requirements, and industry best practices.
Qualifications
- Associate Degree in Electronics, Electrical Technology, Mechatronics, or a related technical field preferred. Equivalent combination of technical education and field service experience will be considered.
- Minimum of five (5) years of experience supporting CNC controls, servo systems, PLCs, automation systems, and machine tools.
- Previous machine tool service experience required; Okuma experience preferred.
- Experience with FANUC controls, Okuma-Howa products, or technical documentation is a plus.
Skills
- Advanced troubleshooting skills across mechanical, electrical, CNC, and automation systems.
- Strong understanding of machine tool technology, hydraulics, pneumatics, and precision measurement.
- Ability to read and interpret blueprints, assembly drawings, and electrical schematics.
- Proficiency with diagnostic and measuring equipment, including lasers, indicators, ball bars, and electrical test instruments.
- Strong customer service, communication, and relationship-building skills.
- Ability to manage multiple priorities and work independently in a fast-paced environment.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications, including Outlook, Word, and Excel.
Physical Requirements
- Ability to stand, walk, bend, reach, and perform physical work for extended periods.
- Ability to lift and carry up to 70 pounds.
- Ability to work safely in manufacturing, warehouse, and customer-site environments.
Travel
Frequent travel required, approximately 75% or greater, to support customer installations, repairs, training, and service activities throughout North America.
