About the Role
As a Field Service Technician III, you will play a critical role in supporting customers through advanced troubleshooting, machine installation, repair, and technical training. This position serves as a key resource for distributors, end users, and internal service teams by resolving complex issues that exceed standard support capabilities. The ideal candidate is a hands-on technical professional with strong diagnostic skills, experience servicing CNC machine tools, and a passion for delivering outstanding customer support.
Responsibilities
- Diagnose and resolve complex mechanical, electrical, CNC control, automation, and software-related issues on Okuma machine tools.
- Provide on-site troubleshooting, repair, and corrective action support at customer facilities.
- Deliver remote technical support via phone and email to customers, distributors, and internal teams.
- Serve as an escalation resource for technical challenges beyond standard distributor support capabilities.
- Perform installation and startup activities for new machine models and equipment introductions.
- Support machine retrofits, upgrades, and implementation of design improvements.
- Verify machine performance through testing, alignment, and system validation activities.
- Document service activities and provide detailed trip reports to management and stakeholders.
- Develop technical bulletins, repair procedures, and training materials that strengthen distributor service capabilities.
- Share technical knowledge and best practices to improve customer support and operational efficiency.
- Identify opportunities to enhance products, processes, and the overall customer experience.
- Adhere to all company policies, procedures, and workplace safety practices.
- Maintain required certifications and perform additional duties as assigned.
Requirements
- Minimum of five (5) years of experience supporting CNC controls, servo systems, PLCs, automation systems, and machine tools.
- Previous machine tool service experience required; Okuma experience preferred.
- Experience with FANUC controls, Okuma-Howa products, or technical documentation is a plus.
- Associate Degree in Electronics, Electrical Technology, Mechatronics, or a related technical field preferred. Equivalent combination of technical education and field service experience will be considered.
Skills
- Advanced troubleshooting skills across mechanical, electrical, CNC, and automation systems.
- Strong understanding of machine tool technology, hydraulics, pneumatics, and precision measurement.
- Ability to read and interpret blueprints, assembly drawings, and electrical schematics.
- Proficiency with diagnostic and measuring equipment, including lasers, indicators, ball bars, and electrical test instruments.
- Strong customer service, communication, and relationship-building skills.
- Ability to manage multiple priorities and work independently in a fast-paced environment.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications, including Outlook, Word, and Excel.
Physical Requirements
- Ability to stand, walk, bend, reach, and perform physical work for extended periods.
- Ability to lift and carry up to 70 pounds.
- Ability to work safely in manufacturing, warehouse, and customer-site environments.
Travel
Frequent travel required, approximately 75% or greater, to support customer installations, repairs, and service activities.
