Field Service Technician II
About the Role
At TDS Telecom, we connect people through cutting-edge fiber internet technology to strengthen communities. As a Field Service Technician II, you will install, troubleshoot, repair, and maintain telecommunications products and equipment (Key Systems, PBX, Centrex Systems, and other business systems). This role involves splicing and maintaining outside plant facilities, including aerial, buried, and underground fiber optic and copper cable. You will have direct customer interaction, proactively selling TDS services and products while exceeding customer expectations through exceptional service.
Due to in-field support and on-call requirements, you must reside within a 60-minute driving distance from the Clayton, IN warehouse (5016 Iowa St, Clayton, IN 46118). This position is eligible for a $2,500 sign-on bonus (payout terms apply).
Responsibilities
- Install, troubleshoot, test, splice, repair, and maintain telephone equipment, customer premise equipment, Video/CATV/DBS, fiber optic/copper facilities, and other TDS products/services for new and existing customers.
- Install, configure, maintain, and repair Key Systems, PBX, Centrex Systems, fiber terminals, ISPs, ISDN, DSL, T-1s, DS3s, and other business systems.
- Identify and repair defective cable using test equipment for buried, aerial, underground, and customer cable.
- Locate cable and fiber for customer requests or construction needs; pole climbing and operating construction equipment required.
- Mark company underground and buried facilities to prevent damage; maintain logs of locate requests.
- Perform cable fault acceptance tests on newly constructed facilities and provide troubleshooting support.
- Respond to "trouble" dispatches and provide high-level support for record systems (cross connects, line groups, network elements).
- Deliver excellent customer service, educate customers on TDS products/services, and identify sales opportunities.
- Manage installation projects and perform additional duties as requested by supervisors.
Requirements
- 1+ year of basic technical telecommunications experience OR current/prior military service with honorable discharge.
- 6+ months of fiber optic and/or copper cable splicing, repair, installation, or switch training.
- Valid driver’s license and adherence to TDS attendance guidelines.
- Ability to meet customer-specific requirements, including background checks.
- Availability for on-call/standby responsibilities and occasional travel.
- Successful completion of Safety Course curriculum upon hire.
- Ability to maintain DOT requirements for operating vehicles with a combined GVRW >10,000 lbs.
Qualifications
- Strong technical understanding of fiber and copper plant installation and troubleshooting.
- Knowledge of telecommunication products/services: Inside Wiring/Cable, Internet/Intranet, Bonding & Grounding, Data/Transmission Concepts, Fiber Optic Transmission, Static Sensitive Equipment, Color Codes, Structured Wiring, Video/CATV/DBS Installation, Inventory Systems, Cable Locating, Battery Maintenance, Key Systems/PBX, Centrex, Switch Maintenance, Voicemail, Special Circuits, Fiber Terminals, Subscriber CXR Terminals, T-1s, ISPs, DSL, ISDN Voice & Data, Testing & Certifying Loops.
- Proficiency with computer applications: Databases, Trouble/Repair/Dispatch Systems, Plant Record Systems, MS Outlook, MS Word, MS Excel, MS Explorer, CD-ROMs.
- Ability to work independently, make decisions, and manage multiple tasks.
- Strong customer service, sales, and communication skills (verbal/written).
- Organizational skills and ability to operate vehicles with manual transmissions.

Pay
The pay range for this position is $25.13–$37.69 per hour. Actual offers will vary based on skills, qualifications, experience, location, and role-specific competencies. Additional compensation may include bonuses or equity awards.
