Field Service Technician

About the Role

As a Field Service Technician, you will create and maintain healthy customer relationships, meet quality standards and delivery schedules, perform repairs and preventive maintenance on vehicles and equipment, and follow the Technician Resource Advancement Certification (TRAC) program. You will also handle general service department duties as directed by the Branch Service Manager.

Responsibilities

  • Administrative:
    • Maintain department communication to complete work and grow service labor sales.
    • Utilize computer programs and John Deere communication tools.
    • Record service hours and mileage; maintain accurate time card entries.
    • Keep parts area, work area, and personal appearance clean and safe.
    • Participate in job-related training and development.
  • Inventory Control:
    • Maintain service truck parts inventory while in the field.
    • Manage personal tool inventory.
  • Service:
    • Perform basic diagnostics and determine necessary repairs; advise customers on replacement parts.
    • Repair and replace damaged or worn parts.
    • Test mechanical products and equipment post-repair to ensure compliance and performance.
    • Prepare reports and forms for work orders, noting causes of failure or problems.
    • Complete warranty information.
    • Service and maintain company vehicles and shop equipment.
    • Maintain current knowledge of Company and competitor products.
    • Read and understand operating manuals, blueprints, and technical drawings.
  • Other Functions:
    • Operate company vehicle to provide field service work.
    • Deliver parts, run errands, and assist with other duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • Strong knowledge of methods, materials, tools, and techniques for repairing heavy construction equipment.
  • Ability to identify complex problems, evaluate options, and implement solutions.
  • Proficiency in operating diagnostic vehicles and equipment.
  • Strong customer service focus.
  • Basic knowledge of Microsoft Office, internet, and office machines (copier, fax, printer).
  • Effective communication skills for customer and coworker interactions.
  • Strong attention to detail and accuracy in work.
  • Ability to work effectively in a team environment and meet commitments/deadlines.
  • Capability to multitask, organize, and prioritize under time constraints.
  • Openness to new procedures, technology, and structural changes.

Physical Requirements

  • Occasional lifting of up to 75 lbs.
  • Ability to stand for extended periods.
  • Capability to work in small areas with arms and hands, using tools for extended durations.
  • Ability to use vibrating tools for extended periods.
  • Capability to climb up and down equipment.
  • Ability to sit for extended periods while traveling in a vehicle.
  • Travel required 95% of the time.
  • Flexible schedule, including some evenings and weekends.

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or GED required.
  • One-year certificate from a college or technical school or at least three years of related experience/training in a subordinate position.
