About the role
Thermo Fisher Scientific is seeking an experienced Field Service Engineer III to provide dedicated, onsite support at our customer's facility in Morgantown, WV.
Key Responsibilities
- Serve as the primary onsite Field Service Engineer supporting the customer's laboratory operations.
- Install, maintain, troubleshoot, repair, calibrate, and validate advanced analytical and microscopy instrumentation.
- Perform scheduled preventive maintenance to maximize instrument reliability and performance.
- Diagnose and resolve complex hardware, software, vacuum, electronic, and electro-mechanical issues.
- Collaborate with remote technical support, engineering, and product specialists to resolve advanced technical challenges.
- Develop strong customer relationships through exceptional service and technical expertise.
- Train customer personnel on proper instrument operation, maintenance, and best practices.
- Maintain accurate service documentation, maintenance records, and reporting within company systems.
- Ensure compliance with all safety policies, laboratory protocols, and customer site requirements.
- Support continuous improvement initiatives and share technical knowledge with teammates.
Minimum Qualifications
- Advanced Degree and 3+ years of experience, or Bachelor's Degree and 5+ years of experience installing, troubleshooting, repairing, and calibrating sophisticated analytical instrumentation, e.g. mass spectrometry, liquid chromatography, and ion chromatography systems.
- Degree in Electronics, Physics, Engineering, Computer Science, Chemistry, or another related technical discipline preferred.
- Demonstrated expertise working with:
- Ultra-high vacuum (UHV) systems
- High-voltage electronics
- Complex electro-mechanical systems
- Strong hardware and software troubleshooting skills.
- Ability to read and interpret technical documentation, electrical schematics, and engineering drawings.
- Proficiency with Windows operating systems, networking fundamentals, and standard business software.
- Excellent customer service, communication, and relationship-building skills.
- Ability to work independently while collaborating effectively with cross-functional teams.
- Valid driver's license.
- Ability to lift up to 50 pounds and work safely in laboratory and cleanroom environments.
- Willingness to participate in ongoing technical training and certification programs.
Preferred Qualifications
- Previous experience supporting electron microscopy, spectroscopy, or other advanced analytical instrumentation.
- Experience mentoring or training junior engineers or laboratory personnel.
- Strong organizational and time management skills in a customer-facing environment.
- Additional language proficiency is a plus.
