Job Summary
This position supervises crews performing various roadway maintenance activities on state roads in Glades and Hendry Counties, including pothole repairs, shoulder work, tree-trimming, sidewalk repairs, and emergency response.
Responsibilities
- Supervise employees in communication, motivation, training, and evaluation.
- Coordinate and participate in roadside maintenance programs.
- Conduct routine highway maintenance inspections and assist in work need surveys.
- Select materials, supplies, and equipment; plan workloads, workflows, deadlines, and objectives.
- Train crew members in identifying and inspecting defective areas.
- Provide technical assistance and determine corrective actions for roadside defects.
- Supervise Department of Corrections inmates performing maintenance activities.
- Oversee crews performing maintenance activities.
- Maintain records of operations and prepare daily paperwork.
- Operate vehicles and equipment, perform preventative maintenance, and assist in repairs.
- Perform manual labor and temporary traffic control.
- Interpret Maintenance Management System Standards and Loss Prevention Procedures.
Qualifications
- Knowledge of basic mathematical principles and calculations.
- Knowledge of standard safety rules and regulations.
- Knowledge of procedures, techniques, use of equipment, materials associated in the repair and maintenance of highways and other highway structures.
- Knowledge of the maintenance rating program.
- Skilled in the operation of a variety of power tools, heavy equipment, and vehicles.
- Skilled in communicating verbally and in writing.
- Ability to perform pre-and post-trip inspections required for commercial motor vehicles with a gross vehicle weight (GVW) of 26,000 pounds or more.
- Ability to supervise employees effectively.
- Ability to complete reports and forms and maintain accurate records.
- Ability to train and instruct crew members.
- Ability to develop and maintain effective working relationships with others.
- Ability to determine work priorities, plan, organize, and coordinate work assignments to ensure proper completion of work assignments.
- Ability to work independently and make job related decisions.
Other Job-Related Requirements
- Must have a valid Class B driver license with an acceptable driving record.
- Must obtain a CDL Class "A" Instructional Permit within 60 days of appointment and a CDL Class "A" license within 10 months of appointment.
- Must be available for emergencies and be "on call" (24 hour duty).
- Must pass a criminal background check to work with or around Department of Corrections inmates.
- Must obtain certification in Temporary Traffic Control (Maintenance of Traffic) – Advanced Level within one year and maintain it.
- Must be responsive to emergency situations within a very short timeframe and serve in the Transportation Emergency Management Team (TEMT).
