About the role
This position involves investigative work in contractor licensing and building construction inspections. You will perform advanced technical work to ensure compliance with adopted building codes through inspections of construction, alterations, and repairs.
Responsibilities
- Investigates complaints of violations concerning contractor licensing, unpermitted construction, and construction code issues.
- Serves as backup for inspector or plans examination staff.
- Inspects building construction to ensure compliance with codes and regulations.
- Makes final inspections of buildings against approved plans to verify compliance.
- Performs records maintenance, clerical work, and activity reports.
- Answers telephone inquiries from the public regarding building problems.
- Issues verbal and written instructions to contractors and other parties to correct licensing and/or construction violations.
- Performs related work as required.
Requirements
- Knowledge of County ordinances, policies, and State Statutes related to construction and contractor licensing.
- Knowledge of licensing laws, construction codes, condemnation, and minimum housing requirements and procedures.
- Knowledge of materials and methods used in general building construction.
- Knowledge of the building trade and stages of construction to identify defects and violations.
- Ability to read and interpret building construction plans and specifications.
- Ability to investigate complaints regarding violations of laws and ordinances.
- Ability to enforce codes and regulations firmly, tactfully, and impartially.
- Ability to maintain records and prepare reports.
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees, contractors, engineers, and the public.
- Ability to operate a computer.
Physical Skills / Working Conditions
- Ability to lift and/or move up to 45 pounds; may require use of a handling device (dolly, cart, etc.) or teamwork for heavier objects.
- Must be able to communicate effectively using verbal, written, and visual communication.
- Requires working indoors and outdoors.
- Must be able to operate a motor vehicle to visit job sites.
- Must be able to walk, stoop, bend, and climb to perform inspections.
Qualifications
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- Five (5) years of construction experience in Building, Electrical, Mechanical, or Plumbing as a supervisor, inspector, foreman, contractor, or journeyman.
Licenses & Certifications
- Valid Florida driver’s license.
- Must obtain a provisional license in Building, Electrical, Mechanical, or Plumbing within 90 days of hire (per Chapter 468, Florida Statutes).
- Must achieve Standard Certification in the hired trade within one (1) year from the date of provisional license issuance.
