Field Engineer I / Field Engineer II
About the role
CAPE is looking for a qualified Field Engineer I or Field Engineer II to join our Construction Services Team as an on-site Project Quality Control (QC) Officer supporting a variety of field projects. This role serves as a stepping stone to the project management career path, with typical duration of 2 to 3 years before transitioning to project management, dependent upon successful performance.
The ideal candidate will provide field support in technical expertise including QC, engineering design, evaluations and assessments, reports, process optimization, and technical program development. This position implements the site-specific QC plan requirements, conducts onsite inspections, documents daily inspections and testing, reviews and approves submittals, and ensures adherence to established procedures.
In the event of a major deficiency, this position is authorized to stop work to prevent further non-conforming work, document the deficiency, investigate causes, and work with the Project Manager and Superintendent to resolve it. During downtime between field projects, you will work from home on training, report writing, preparations for the next assignment, and supporting other divisions.
CAPE’s project scopes vary widely. Examples include:
- Multi-phase Superfund remedial action projects, including demolition and construction of groundwater treatment facilities with reinforced concrete foundations, structural steel, fire suppression systems, and emergency generators.
- Construction of groundwater treatment plants for PFOS/PFOA/PFNA-impacted water, featuring pre/post chlorination, green sand filtration, and lime slurry dosing within CMU buildings.
- Water line extensions involving open trenching and horizontal directional drilling.
- Soil and groundwater remediation projects, including excavation, subsurface treatment systems, in situ treatment, and erosion/sediment controls.
- Phased remedial design and construction with integrated stormwater management.
Responsibilities
- Implement site-specific QC plan requirements for assigned projects.
- Conduct onsite inspections and document daily inspections, testing, and adherence to procedures.
- Review and approve submittals; implement the 3-phase QC process.
- Provide follow-up inspections and document correction of deficiencies.
- Attend and conduct meetings (kickoff, coordination, mutual understanding, QC meetings).
- Stop work in the event of a major deficiency, document and investigate causes, and ensure resolution.
- Work closely with Senior Engineers for support, coaching, and training.
- During downtime, focus on training, report writing, and preparations for upcoming assignments.
- Support other divisions (technical, estimating, project management) as needed.
- Assist in identifying client standards, legal/regulatory requirements, and industry standards for projects.
- Communicate standards to project staff, resolve conflicts, and ensure compliance.
- Keep licensing and certifications current.
- Ensure timely generation, collection, dissemination, storage, and disposition of project information.
- Comply with State Boards of licensure for Professional Engineers and Surveyors.
- Meet budgets, schedules, and client expectations.
- Develop and mentor junior staff and support colleagues’ professional growth.
- Establish contacts with vendors, subcontractors, manufacturers, and laboratories for quotes and submittals.
Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering or Construction Management.
- Field Engineer I: Three (3) years of experience in design, field management, and QC management, with at least one (1) year in QC field management. Engineer in Training (EIT) or similar highly desired.
- Field Engineer II: Four (4) years of experience in design, field management, and QC management, with at least one (1) year in each area except two (2) years in QC field management. Registered as a Professional Engineer (PE) or similar in at least one state.
- Experience in construction work and ensuring quality, including working with subcontractors and self-performing crews.
- Ability to use technical/functional expertise to establish plans, develop systems, and processes.
- Proficient computer skills, including management of information technology platforms.
- Strong oral and written communication skills.
- Ability to provide direction and foster teamwork in a diverse environment.

- Valid driver’s license and ability to submit verification of U.S. citizenship.
Physical Requirements
- Potential exposure to equipment operation hazards and moving mechanical parts.
- Occasional exposure to wet/humid conditions, elevated work locations, outdoor weather, and temperature extremes.
- Moderate to high noise exposures in the work environment.
- Potential exposure to chemical, physical, and biological hazards (e.g., hazardous materials, airborne contaminants, poisonous plants/animals).
- Frequent standing and sitting; occasional walking, climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, or crawling.
- Occasional lifting and/or moving of objects up to 50 pounds.
- Vision abilities required: close vision, distance vision, color vision, and ability to adjust focus.
- Ability to safely use construction equipment.
- 75-90% travel required for technical project support.

Pay
$90,000 – $120,000 annually, commensurate with experience and qualifications.
