Fiber Splicer Laborer

About the role

FiberTel is hiring an entry-level Fiber Splicer Laborer in Springville, UT. In this role, you will perform general labor as directed by the Fiber Splicer and assist with all phases of telecommunication construction. You will also have the opportunity to learn fiber splicing, a highly valuable skill.

Responsibilities

• Load, drive, deliver, dig, remove, and place various types, sizes, and weights of construction materials and equipment.
• Assist the Fiber Splicer in any labor capacity as needed.
• Learn fiber splicing and support the Fiber Splicer by handling general work so they can focus on specialty tasks.
• Hand dig using shovels and mechanical tools.
• Install and maintain underground telecommunications cabling.
• Operate or work around heavy equipment and machinery.
• Work in congested or remote areas while maintaining visual and audible contact with crew members and surroundings to ensure safety.
• Perform general construction work under the direction of a Foreman/Supervisor.
• Maintain safe working habits and conditions according to all regulations, procedures, and policies.
• Assist the operator and foreman as assigned, including setup, preparation, and cleanup of construction sites.
• Develop an understanding of buried utilities.
• Lift heavy equipment and supplies (regularly up to 75 pounds).

Requirements

• Must pass a pre-employment drug screen and background check.
• Possess a valid driver’s license or be eligible and willing to obtain one.
• Good driving record required.
• Basic knowledge of and ability to safely operate utility trucks, equipment, and hand tools.
• Class A Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) is a plus (higher wage scales apply to CDL holders).
• Ability to communicate effectively with customers and employees.
• Willing and able to work in all weather conditions.

Preferred Qualifications

• Previous construction experience, preferably in the telecommunication industry.
• Able to perform all duties in telecommunication construction.
• Ability to travel.

Working Conditions

This is a full-time hourly position, expected to work at least 40 hours per week in an outdoor environment. You will be regularly exposed to outside weather conditions, including extreme cold, rain, sleet, snow, humidity, high temperatures, and high wind. The work environment varies throughout the day, including changes in terrain, traffic, urban settings, and rural settings. You may occasionally be exposed to natural gas and the risk of electrical shock, as well as moderate to loud noise levels.

Physical Requirements

• Ability to stand for long periods (up to 12 hours at a time).
• Tolerate work in extreme weather conditions.
• Speak and hear worksite safety instructions.
• Withstand prolonged and repeated lifting, standing, climbing, kneeling, reaching, crouching, and crawling.
• Regularly lift 75 pounds.
• Specific vision abilities required include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.
