About the role

The Farm Maintenance Technician position is available within Smithfield, a company dedicated to sustainable food production and responsible practices. This role involves maintaining and repairing physical structures such as lagoons and sewer lines, adhering to company policies and safety protocols.

Responsibilities

  • Learn and implement Biosecurity policies and procedures.
  • Follow animal welfare and safety guidelines as outlined by the company.
  • Participate in the Emergency Management System (EMS) and comply with all relevant laws and procedures.
  • Report environmental issues immediately to supervisors.
  • Understand and follow the company’s emergency notification process.
  • Unplug, clean, and perform Preventive Maintenance (PM) on sewer discharge lines.
  • Use a sewer camera to identify and address blockages in lines.
  • Work in various weather conditions and use hand tools as necessary.
  • Be available for 24/7 emergency callouts, including weekends and holidays.
  • Perform other tasks as assigned.

Qualifications

  • A Class A CDL with tanker endorsement or willingness to obtain one.
  • A high school diploma or equivalent, required.
  • Ability to lift 70 lbs unassisted with full range of motion.
  • Valid state driver’s license with an acceptable driving record.
  • Able to work an average 45-hour week with frequent changes in schedule.
  • Willingness to work weekends, evenings, and holidays as needed.
  • On-call availability for emergency situations, including barn plug repairs and personnel shortages.
  • Physical requirements include lifting up to 100 lbs occasionally, standing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, reaching, and using hands and arms.

Physical Demands

  • Regularly use hands for fine motor skills, reach, and grasp.
  • Frequent standing, walking, stooping, kneeling, and crouching.
  • Occasionally lift and move up to 75 lbs.
  • Must be able to work in confined spaces and on uneven terrain.
  • Must be able to walk and stand for 9-12 hours per day.
  • Must be able to operate a high-pressure washing system.
  • Must be able to tolerate exposure to blood, animal dander, manure, dust, odors, and noisy conditions.
