Family Visitation Specialist

About the role

The Family Visitation Specialist coordinates and delivers a coached family visitation program for parents working toward reunification with their children who are currently placed with relatives or other caregivers. Through structured visits, the specialist helps parents build effective parenting skills and strengthen healthy, positive relationships with their children, supporting family progress toward less restrictive levels of supervision and increased independence.

Schedule

Full and part-time candidates are encouraged to apply. This role requires consistent afternoon and evening availability, as most family visitation services occur after school and work hours.

  • Full-time staff typically work a 37.5-hour schedule including late morning and evening hours (e.g., 11:00 am – 7:30 pm), though schedules may vary based on family needs.
  • Occasional Saturday visits may be required.
  • Part-time staff generally work 10–15 hours per week, primarily during afternoon, evening, or Saturday visitation hours, with additional hours available based on program needs.

Responsibilities

  • Facilitate initial meetings with parents to explain visit coaching, establish visit schedules, identify children’s needs, and develop a preliminary visit plan.
  • Supervise visits to ensure the safety and well-being of children, ensuring their needs remain the primary focus.
  • Meet with parents before each visit to review and rehearse the visit plan; meet afterward to review progress and plan next steps.
  • Use coaching, modeling, praising, rehearsal, and strength-based approaches to help parents recognize and meet their children’s needs.
  • Provide coaching and support to improve relationships between parents and kinship caregivers.
  • Frequently transport children to visits from schools, daycares, foster homes, or kinship caregivers.
  • Complete progress notes in the electronic case record following each visit.
  • Oversee scheduling of visitation rooms and maintain them in a clean and tidy manner.
  • Maintain positive working relationships with parents, caregivers, children, program staff, and agency partners.
  • Comply with all aspects of the Vehicle Safety and Usage Policy and submit required documentation.
  • Maintain a dynamic caseload and meet established monthly billable service targets, with caseloads varying based on family needs and service progression.
  • Prepare, complete, and submit required reports and statistical data on the client population in a timely manner.

Requirements

  • Minimum of a bachelor’s degree in social work or a related field.
  • One (1) year of experience in child welfare or a related field is preferred.
  • Well-developed interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Ability to accept feedback and directives from program management and agency leadership.
  • Highly organized, motivated, and self-directed.
  • Strong time management skills, including timely completion of progress notes, billing documentation, and transportation records.
  • Proficient in verbal and written communication with a calm, compassionate demeanor in person, on virtual platforms, and by telephone.
  • Demonstrated commitment to a team atmosphere and willingness to assist others.
  • Available to regularly work evening and weekend hours to meet family scheduling needs.
  • Possess a valid New York State driver’s license and access to a reliable personal vehicle for work-related transportation. While agency vehicles are typically provided for transporting children, staff may occasionally need to use their personal vehicle.

Pay

Competitive pay range of $48,000–$50,500 per year based on education and qualifications.
