About the role

The Family Support Coordinator (FSC) at DonorConnect will provide potential donor families with the opportunity to donate organs, tissues, and eyes by advocating for registered donors and educating potential donor families on the life-saving gift of donation. Additionally, the FSC will provide guidance and support to grieving families.

Responsibilities

  • Support families through the donation process by creating a positive environment
  • Develop a plan for approaching families about donation, leading the approach conversation with families to obtain an accurate medical/social history and authorization for organ, eye, and tissue donation
  • Provide emotional support to grieving families in a hospital setting
  • Support hospital staff by answering questions and promoting DonorConnect
  • Complete case follow-up tasks, documentation, time sheets, and other necessary tasks
  • Support continuous improvement efforts within both your team and the organization

Requirements

  • Minimum two years of counseling, social work, or bereavement support experience
  • Minimum two years of working with families in crisis situations in a hospital setting, especially critical care units
  • Demonstrated skills in advocacy, communication, and/or sales, especially in environments that require building trust and guiding individuals through complex decisions
  • Strong preference for bilingual English and Spanish applicants

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Behavioral Science or Social Science preferred, and/or an equivalent combination of education and relevant work experience
  • Completion of the Gift of Life Institute training within 6 months of hire
  • Grief/bereavement certification, training, and/or education preferred
  • Knowledge of computer hardware and software
  • Advanced level of sensitivity in providing emotional support to grieving families in the hospital setting
  • Ability to assess family dynamics as the basis for a plan for support
  • Proven ability to communicate with empathy, and advocate effectively for mission-driven outcomes
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills
  • Attentive to detail and ability to maintain accurate records
  • Able to work well with all levels of personnel in hospital settings, and within the guidelines of each institution
  • Willingness to train and assist others
  • Must be able to work flexible and long hours and provide call coverage on nights, weekends, and holidays
  • Ability to stand and walk for extended periods of time
  • Ability to lift up to 25 pounds with or without reasonable accommodation
  • Ability to stoop, squat, or bend frequently
  • Exposure to patient elements including communicable diseases, bloodborne pathogens, and other common hazards of a clinical setting
  • Ability to reason logically and make sound decisions, to consider alternative and diverse perspectives, to communicate effectively both orally and in writing

Skills

  • Strong behavioral assessment and crisis intervention skills, including experience with de-escalation techniques
  • Knowledge of organ and tissue donation
  • Advanced level of sensitivity in providing emotional support to grieving families in the hospital setting
  • Ability to assess family dynamics as the basis for a plan for support
  • Proven ability to communicate with empathy, and advocate effectively for mission-driven outcomes

Pay

Salary range: $40,000 - $50,000 annually

Schedule

Seven 12-hour call shifts per pay period, including nights, weekends, and holidays.
