The Chesterfield-Colonial Heights Department of Social Services is hiring a Family Services Specialist to help individuals and families in Chesterfield County and Colonial Heights by providing services through the Interstate Compact on the Placement of Children (ICPC) program.

What You Do And How You Do It

  • Conduct home studies and provide supervision for foster children in custody of another state through the Interstate Compact on the Placement of Children program.
  • Conduct court-ordered home studies for custody cases.
  • Assist Senior Family Services Specialists with local ICPC cases.
  • Act as a liaison with the State ICPC office.
  • Provide complex casework/counseling.
  • Engage families in prevention strategies.
  • Interview and assess families as placement resources using trauma-informed practices.
  • Assure compliance with minimum standards for foster home approval.
  • Write reports, correspondence, and case narratives.
  • Testify in court.

Here's What You Need

  • Minimum of a Bachelor's degree in a Human Services field or minimum of a Bachelor's degree in any field with a minimum of two years of appropriate and related experience in a Human Services area (Section 22VAC40-670-20 of the Administrative Code of Virginia).
  • Any combination of training and experience which provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Possession of a BSW or MSW degree and a Commonwealth of Virginia Social Worker license are desirable.
  • Experience in foster care programs preferred.
  • Knowledge of trauma-informed practices preferred.
  • Excellent organizational, time management, oral/written communication, public relations, and interpersonal skills preferred.
  • Knowledge and ability to apply social work principles and practice to children and families preferred.
  • Ability to demonstrate exceptional critical thinking and decision-making skills during crisis situations preferred.
  • Computer proficiency preferred.
  • Exceptional ability to collaborate and achieve performance goals preferred.
  • Ability to work on a flexible schedule and outside of the normal business hours as needed.
  • Current valid driver’s license and good driving record required.
  • Out of state driving records must be obtained by applicant and presented at time of interview.
  • Records must reflect at least three years of history and be dated within thirty days of interview date.
  • Pre-employment drug testing and FBI criminal background check are required.
  • A Chesterfield County application is also required and must be submitted online by the deadline.

Monday - Friday; 8:30 a.m. - 5:00 p.m.

  • This position is part of an Emergency Shelter Team during times of natural disaster, reporting to shelter duty as required.
