About the Location
Oliver, known as the “Wine Capital of Canada,” is surrounded by picturesque orchards, vineyards, and forested mountains. Located at the south end of BC’s Okanagan Valley, it lies 21 km north of the US border crossing at Osoyoos and 42 km south of Penticton, BC. The area offers abundant fresh local produce, opportunities for water sports (windsurfing, canoeing, fishing), cycling, wildlife viewing, and horseback riding. Oliver features a friendly multicultural community with unique story-book buildings, a vibrant arts and music scene, and a high quality of life.
About the Facility
The South Okanagan General Hospital (SOGH) is a Level 1 Community Hospital serving approximately 12,000 residents from Oliver, Osoyoos, and Okanagan Falls, plus an additional 10,000 in surrounding rural areas. SOGH provides:
- 24/7 Emergency Department with overlapping shift coverage during peak hours
- 18 inpatient beds
- On-site outpatient ambulatory, acute care, Allied Health Services, pharmacy, X-Ray, and laboratory services
Most urgent referrals are directed to Penticton Regional Hospital. The Emergency Department operates on seasonal shift schedules: 0700-1500, 1300-2000, and 1900-0700 in winter, with daytime shifts extended by one hour during busier months.
About the Role
The collegial Emergency team in Oliver has two positions available. The team includes Family Physicians (FP) and FP-ER physicians with diverse backgrounds, including CCFP(EM) and FP-EM certifications. While CCFP-EM/FP-EM is not required, it is welcome. The role offers opportunities to collaborate with the University of British Columbia’s Southern Medical Program and mentor Family Practice Residents. Physicians may also expand their scope of practice within the medical community.
Leadership Development Opportunities are available through Interior Health’s NAVIG8 Program, a comprehensive leadership development initiative for emerging physician leaders. Locum opportunities are also available for those interested in exploring the area before committing to a permanent role.
Pay
Compensation is provided under a Clinical Service Contract with estimated remuneration of:
- $366,046 per 1.0 FTE for EMEMGP
- $403,668 per 1.0 FTE for EMEMSP
Additional remuneration may be available under the Rural Subsidiary Agreement (RSA), including:
- Retention Premium: 4.73%
- Retention Flat Fee: $7,322
- Relocation Funding: $9,000–$15,000
- Recruitment Incentive: $10,000
- Rural CME: Up to $4,400/year after 4 years in practice
Candidates with a BC or Canada student loan may qualify for a loan forgiveness program. Rural incentives are subject to change, and current rates are confirmed at the time of offer.
